Been thinking about getting one of those. Records show up at yard and garage sales quite cheap.

And you'd be amazed at how much ISNT on CD.

Try getting the Stray cats "Built For speed" on CD. Can't do it without paying 50$ for something from Japan.

Or howzabout "George Jones Sings Bob Wills" Out Of Print in CD and fetchin collector prices.

The record companies are concerned for the record companies alone.

How can recording artists as big as the Dixie Chicks claim they make very little money from CD sales and almost ALL their income from concerts?

I'm reminded of the Mettalica/Napster Congressional hearing, where members of Metallica stood crying about their losses.

But there where other speakers before Congress that day too, Roger McGuinn of The Byrds testified how he made only a few thousand from The Byrds song "Turn, Turn, Turn" a classic R&R song, and yet gets a 50% profit selling music via the internet.

They also make them so you dont even need a computer, just a USB drive. Would have gotten one like that, but I had Best Buy gift cards and they didnt sell that style. Not complaining though. Ripped an old Chicago CD and it sure brought back memories. I have some old Christian stuff I am going to dig out next that I cant find on CD (Bash-n-the Code, Sweet Comfort, Allies, Jerusalem.....)
Let the wild rumpus start!

What if?

Postby Pastor Gary » January 2nd, 2008, 4:30 pm

What if there were no middle-men in the process?

What if songwriters and artists utilized newer technologies to promote and distribute their products, eliminating the businesses who produce not art, but distribution?

If the product generated $1 of revenue, and there was some equitable split (X for the writer + Y for the performer) and they benefitted directly and immediately from their work, it would seem like a win/win.

As an aside: the copyright laws need to be completely revamped to reflect the new realities of digital technologies, time and media shifting.

There are artists who give away their music (since record companies keep so much anyway) and it gets out to more people to show up at their concerts, which are geared to earn them more money anyway. You have to move a lot of product to keep your head above water but you can keep the roads hot and earn a decent living if you have enough places to play.

Two significant events of 2007 were Radiohead selling In Rainbows for next to nothing on the internet and Madonna choosing to sign with Live Nation, which is primarily an event company, for the next phase of her career. Both do not bode well for the traditional album-for-sale method of delivery.
