I just had a question for you pastors and attenders.
How many Sundays does your pastor miss each year?
Is it okay with you?
Does the situation vary?
How many is too many?
Your opinions welcome.

Our pastor rarely misses. (1 per year?)
He missed a wedding of a dear friend THIS weekend because he has difficulty being gone. Extra note...his wife went,....driving 6 hours to get there.
Medical? Dedicated? Nervous? Personality?
I don't really know why, but he has always been that way ever since I have known him.
Perhaps he feels the congregation who are paying him deserve that.
Our family has missed only 1 time this year as well (travel)...but I know this is not possible for everybody.

Response: Thats funny, our state convention recommends that the pastor be given every fifth Sunday off.
I think they recognize that it is good for the ministers personal well being.
You mean...

You mean every "5th Sunday" -- as in that extra weekend once a quarter, or "every fifth Sunday" as in "on 4/off 1?"

What was so funny? And sure, a break is fine, but he chooses to take a "break" on Mon-Wed so he doesn't miss. BTW, my comments were not an attack on any pastor that misses a Sunday, as I stated, that is "not always possible."

I thought I heard that the Assembly recommended that the pastor have at least 3 weeks vacation time a year.
So that would mean, what? 3 sundays away from the pulpit.
IMHO.. I think they get a lot more than that.
Clarify.

Joey I just meant different "funny".
Pastor Gary I meant once a quarter.
I'm sure things are different in other places and personalities.
When you work a job for quite a while they reward you by extra vacation etc. Why not for pastors as well?
This past year I missed preaching somewhere on a Sunday A.M. three times all were ministry related, State convention, North American Leadership conf. and National officers meeting for the motorcycle ministry. Two other sundays I preached at other churches.
I was just a little curious about how different people view their pastor missing.

I think a Pastor desevres to take a few Sundays off during the year, if a Pastor can't have a getaway once in awhile because of his church then something is wrong. In our church the pastor is gone about 5 Sundays a year.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Those 5 Sundays are paid too.

I guess I need to call my boss and tell him I need every fith Monday off.....it is good for my personal well being....
Well, actually it's 5th Sundays and not EVERY 5th Sunday in a row.
Are you suggesting that your job places the same mental and physical toil on your personal well being as a pastor's does?

Why not? (And I mean nothing by this other than just asking a question) Do you think pastors should work for free, especially one of a church with, oh, I don't know...50+ members? Isn't a man worthy of his hire?

What did he have to do with that win besides owning some red t-shirts in a blue state where a trader coach still looms?

I am a pastor and I take off about 2 or 3 Sundays per calendar year. It is hard for me to get away because I don't have anyone to fill in for me when I'm away. I have not had anyone complain to me in a long time, but I encourage my members to take time away for vacation. When a family tells me that they are going to be out of town for a weekend, I encourage them to enjoy themselves and get some rest and relaxation. Even when I am away, the church is still on my mind and I rarely relax on Sunday. My pet peeve is well meaning relatives who think that I should agree to preach at their home church when I am trying to relax.
