The anonymity of the internet

Postby Pastor Gary » February 26th, 2003, 8:03 pm

Unlike other forums, in which participants remain totally anonymous, this group has been very much an ohana --an extended family-- often using real names.

We have never asked here about race. The thread about the Civil War started me thinking about how our education, region and, yes, race, can affect our views of sociological issues and our perspective on history. I recognize that some people belief racial distinctions to be an artificial social construct but humor me...

If I am completing some type of form for something, I always put "caucasian" but in actuality, I have Native-American, Irish and German in my ancestory.

Statistics...

Postby Mike Vande » February 27th, 2003, 2:50 am

Statistically speaking, it is possible for everyone drawing breath today to claim decent from the Emperor Charlemagne AND Shaka Zulu. There is no such thing as a "pure" racial group, we have all been "miscegenated" (to borrow a phrase from the KKK wizard "O Brother, Where Art Thou") to one degree or another. And let us not forget, we believe that ALL races came from the same genetic forebearers, Adam and Eve. Deliniations of race are articficial in the face of those facts.

I consider myself to be a potpurri. My grandparents on one side were full blooded Irish. On the tother side there is German and French.
My wife is Phillipino. My brother married an Islander. 2 Aunts who are African American.

Family gatherings are very diverse and offer wide variety of foods!
Let the wild rumpus start!

Are you related by marriage to the Cabales family? Jim & Josie are friends.

I think we are all some sort of mix, but if I were filling out an application and it asked, I would put caucasian.

Thank God, He doesn't look on anything, but our heart.
And they are all black until His red blood, cleanses them to pure white.

Born on a mountain top in Tennessee
Greenest state in the land of the free...

Cumberland Mountains!
Mixed Breed.
Great grandmother a full fledged Indian Princess. Married a
Irish man..
Wow!! What kids they musta had. Meaner than snakes, I'd suppose.

My Momma remembers a picture of her grandmother(the Indian Princess) hanging on a wall.
Scareing her to death as her cold black eyes would stare out at her with a piercing stare. Where ever she went those eyes would be up on her, glaring at her. (She was looking at it through the eyes of a child)

Her Father had the red hair from the lineage and I believe thats where Cassadie gets hers. Copper top we call her.

My true choice wasn't there

Postby Shellie » March 1st, 2003, 9:17 am

Well, Gary, I was disappointed to not see my true race here so I just checked caucasion. However, I was looking for the choice of "rat race" since that's what I feel most part of today.

I think we are all "Heinz 57", but I think I can list some of my major parts

On my mama's side I am English and Irish. On my daddy's side mostly Native American. Soooo, most days I just say I'm confused.
There never was a horse that couldn't be rode and there never was a cowboy that couldn't be throwed.

Don't forget - I was born in the "Holy Land" at Bradley Memorial (Cleveland, TN). I'm just jealous of those who weren't...

Actually, I do like the Nashville area - just not Eastern TN. Yes, Brenda, I know the Smokey Mountains are pretty. I just cannot handle the BIG ORANGE! Yuck! It clashes with my blue........
