Worship Music Poll

I just thought it would be interesting to take a poll of your individual churches and get a gauge as to what kind of worship music everyone uses in their regular services. Just for fun.

"Hymns" mean of course, blue book, or any other good old fashioned hymn written long before our time.

"Contemporary" means fairly new...yes, "Awesome God" is contemporary.

I'll start...my church uses a good mix of both but we lean more toward contemporary. I like the mixture...it's good to remember our roots but also to learn new stuff. The style of worship tends to suit all age groups well in our church...there's not a big disconnect between the elders and the younger group when it comes to worship, and that's a good thing.

we lean way heavy on Contemporary. Blue books (or any other colored book) are not used anymore and havent been for years.

Older hymns are worked in from time to time.

Every once in a while the P and W team does a hymn as a prelude while people are getting settled.

I really like hearing some of that stuff.

we have brown books AND the blue books!! (we use some to hold up the bass amp that is partially sitting on a step at the altar, and more to tilt up the monitor inside the pulpit, so that it is more easily readable by the P&W team. we have flown the projector, but our ceilings won't really accommodate flying a video monitor.

great poll and subject

Worship must come from the heart and really music has nothing to do with it though we can use music to worship God. In my opinion, most of us have not really unlocked the true meaning and practice of worship. This is not meant as an attack on anyone's faith, if it were I would stand guilty, but singing and clapping to the beat is not really worship.

The angel that showed John around heaven and all the visions and such said Worship God. This was in response to John falling down before him. Worship is total submission, bowing, humiliation, etc.

I do think worship and praise are two different subjects as well.

We do a good mix of both.

But, our worship pastor usually arranges all of the hymn music so it's more contemporary in style.

The message of the song is still there without the death march music that so many of them were sung to back in the day.

He also takes secular songs and writes praise lyrics for them which we love to sing.

Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets (timbrel/tambourine) and of thy pipes (wind instruments/pipe/flute) was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. - Ezekiel 28:11-19

Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us? Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols (lyre/lute/harp): the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee. How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. - Isaiah 14:9-14

It is obvious from the evidence of these two most descriptive passages that Lucifer, at the very least, contained something akin to musical instruments - the tambourine, the flute, and the harp all within the confines of his own body. Since Lucifer is a created being, he was originally created with instruments to provide beautiful music for none other than the glorification of God. Lucifer, being the most authoritative and superior angel that he was, at best, was also probably the angel of music.

Even our hymns are done in contemporary style. We're too modern, now and a-go-go to do anything else. Funny thing is, according to a recent survey, 70% of our congregation is over 50.

Go figure.

Contemporary...

Contemporary, but nothing you'd hear on the dove awards.
