What is the key to a popular internet site? I know one must tap into a "niche" market so to speak, but what are the key factors? For instance, you would think that a site like the following would be more popular, with hits, ads, etc:
www.mybaby.com
Any thoughts?

I wish I knew. After I read somewhere about a twentysomething couple that gets $100K a month from Google on their advertising alone, I have wracked my brain to figure out a website that would generate a massive amount of traffic.

Let's hook up DeWayne.
We could prolly split that kind of money pretty easy. I have about 30 domains registered already. Some are decent and rank 8 - 11 on the scale according to their amount of letters, etc.

Honestly. Great domains are not the key although it can help greatly.. especially if directly related to the service or product.
Examples..
Amazon.com - Who is that unless millions in advertising was spent.
Youtube.com - Nothing extraordinary in the name.. just that it offers an incredible service.
Google.com - This word has become part of searching even if using another search source... BUT would you have purchased it for searching?
It comes down to having a unique niche service, concept or product with tons of advertising dollars... UNLESS you can do something so unique that it spreads on it's very on like a verbal virus.
Also.. gazillions of $$$ effort, design, complex code goes into making these sites work and effective at what they do.

Understanding and gaming the system so that you rank high on search engines is important.

I'll take the latter. Like the following sites that have boomed with minimal investment.
www.whateverlife.com (mentioned in another thread)
www.myyearbook.com
Both of these sites were created by teens. Ouch.

Let's see... if Jude2 had been set up as a subscription site, and, assuming it would have attracted the same amount of users:
897 registered users x $1/year would have generated $879/year
897 registered users x $5/year would have generated $4,485/year
897 registered users x $10/year would have generated $8970/year
897 registered users x $20/year would have generated $17,940/year
...and so forth. Of course that is based on a ton of "IFS" and is nowhere near the millions in ad revenue people seem to scrape in.

Indeed but the first quit school to manage all the workers and reinvests all but $3000 a month back into the business. That million is being used.
She had skills and invested all her time and right niche = success in her work.
