I think I posted this question here before with no response, but can anyone give me any history concerning the FOTW rose? I first saw these roses in FOTW several years ago and they were HUGE, literally the largest blooms that I've ever witnessed on a rose.

These roses are now cropping up all over and the link above gives credit to the roses found in Murphy, NC.

Anyone know?

Fields of the Wood is a found rose, named for the place it was found - was it some kind of a church camp, or something like that? A number of people believe it might actually be 'Rhode Island Red', but the jury is still out.
I know it's sold by Countryside Roses in Mississippi (in the hybrid tea section - sold out for now) and Vintage Gardens in California, and HelpMeFind.com lists Rogue Valley Roses in Oregon as another source. There could be others, perhaps Ashdown Roses in South Carolina might carry it.

****That's the history. Somebody "Found" this hybrid at FOTW and started growing it elsewhere and it took off. Nothing special, no connection to cogop other thanit grows at FOTW. Another site I read said it was a close relative of the Rhode Island Red that had mutated into it's own variety

That still doesn't explain to me who first planted them or how they got them to grow so huge. I'm telling you when I first saw these roses in FOTW they were massive. Some blooms were the size of those little basketballs you get with team mascots on them. I've been to Cypress Gardens, Busch Gardens, Disney World, and several other nice places but I've never seen a rose any lovelier or larger than those grown at FOTW during the early 90's.
