Family Traditions

I'm getting ready to make out my grocery list for Thanksgiving dinner. My daughter and son-in-law will be here for the first time in 3 years. I asked my daughter if there was anything special she wanted and her quick reply was "Yes Mom, just the normal Thanksgiving dinner, just like you and Grandmother always fixed". That got me to thinking how I fix exactly the same meals for the holidays that my mother fixed and the very few times I fixed something different my kids let me know they don't want anything new. I can fix all kinds of new things any other time of the year, just not for holidays and birthdays. I love this time of year, I feel very close to my family, the ones that came before me and those still with me, even though we may not be together in body we are in spirit. So tomorrow I'll go buy the same food I buy every Thanksgiving and tell God thank you for letting me do this one more year.

I am with the kids -- traditions exist for reasons, and I hate it when people mess with Thanksgiving foods. I don't want some fancy-shmancy variation of potatoes you saw on the Food Network, I want ordinary, customary, regular mashed potatoes. And I don't want TurDucken or anything weird -- I want a Butterball turkey roasted in the oven til that red gizmo pops up, and some southern-style cornbread dressing, not boxed stuffing. Regular. Plain. Wonderful.

haha! Ya'll are funny.
We are starting a new tradition this year. Danny is doing breakfast and I am doing dinner. Each kid gets to pick a dish and make it themselves with me and Danny. Somehow we ended up not having any thing to do on Thanksgiving Day... so we decided to do it together. Lord knows we are big enough of a family it is like a whole crew is over for a visit.

I may even let them eat on a chinette plate on the couch while watching football.
