Mike Warnke

Anyone remember Mike Warnke? When I was looking at the Chick Tracks, I came across his name and re-read some of his story. He was a Christian comedian that had a testimony of involvement in a Satanic cult (which was later disputed by an in-depth article from Cornerstone magazine). I saw him with the youth group a couple of times as a teen and read his book. Years later, I was working at a bookstore when the Cornerstone story came out and we pulled all of his products from the shelves. He's still traveling and speaking in churches, although probably not to the size of crowds I saw him perform in earlier. Has anyone seen him lately? I'm curious if he's changed his story.

I do remember him, but haven't heard anything about him in a long time.

Growing up we had a tape of his and we WORE IT OUT! I think I could quote it verbatim. There are a lot of scenarios in our lives where we quote Mike Warnke!

I never heard much about the whole controversy thing (because I was young at the time and my parents didn't want their kids reading about Satanic cults, etc) and I never looked back into it.

I found his website:

http://www.mikewarnke.org/default.asp?s ... e=main.asp

They address the controversy there under the FAQ. You can see all the documentation of his "Tribunal Board Hearing" - I'm guessing ministers over his ministry? - and how it all turned out. I'll have to look into it later.

Looks like he's still touring - but not much, that's for sure.

He spoke at a non-denominational church in Milledgeville that I visited once, about 8 years ago. I was there a week after he had visited. He had a new tape and I listened to it. He acknowledges all the wrongs that had been reported on him, repents and testifies to the grace of God. The new tape was actually funnier than all of his old stuff that I loved. I imagine he is on the 'net somewhere and you could find his stuff.

There is a letter from the group that "put restrictions on him" after all of that controversy. You can find it under the FAQ section.

That article in Cornerstone broke my heart. I loved Warnke's stuff, and finding out his whole testimony was garbage and his Christian walk was a joke was very discouraging. He's still selling the stuff that says he was a satanic high priest, so I guess he hasn't repented of the lie yet.

Hey! His site says he's in Harrodsburg, Ky (one of my family's old hometowns) not too far from here.

From what I understand, he was still involved in satanism, even a "high priest" it just wasn't over the huge group he claimed. It was a small group of college students. Don't remember exactly and may be incorrect.

Like I said I haven't researched all of that yet, but I did notice that the only book he's selling is called "Schemes of Satan", which could be about just that, and he's not selling "The Satan Seller" anymore, from my understanding that was the book in question. I couldn't see from the audio has listed that anything directly talks about him being a satanic high priest, but I'd have to listen to it all to be sure.

Warnke and his wife conceded it wasn't as big of a group, but Cornerstone's articles pretty much allege he wasn't involved at all or at least nowhere near in the capacity he claimed. For instance, he mentioned spending time with Charles Manson, who was incarcerated at the time Warnke claimed to be with him.

Another curious point was that Warnke mentioned some pretty significant criminal activity but kept his direct involvement to a minimum, so he wouldn't have any legal restitution to make. To me, that speaks volumes.

Here's the entire Cornerstone report along with some responses from the Warnkes and others.

I read my dad's copy of "The Satan Seller" and we watched a few of his comedy tapes in youth group.

So much of the satanic stuff of the 70's was either overblown, or outright bull. I remember reading these books that said I would go to hell for listening to KISS.

Didn't he do some time after his lies were made public?? Don't know why I'm thinking that, may have him confused with someone else. Saw him at Whitesburg Baptist Church in Huntsville in around 1988, 1989 or so. He was funny and I liked him.

You may be thinking of John Todd, who shared stories similar to Warnke's, but was later arrested for rape and served over 20 years. As far as I know, Warnke was never arrested.

I read that whole Cornerstone article you posted the link to Dewayne. It's hard to imagine how Warnke could be more full of mess. What a total liar.

He's still selling all the albums he claimed to be a satanist high priest on, including "Mike Warnke Live", which was his whole testimony about it.
