I am fixing to upgrade my Office software from Office 2000 to 2007.

I have a license question. In the old days you could install office on your office computer and a home/laptop computer . Is that still true??

I know it goes thru an authenication process via internet..

Not sure about the licensing, but be sure to remove the old version first, while it says both can run together, we have run into some problems with it on campus. Also be sure to update any older files, If you have .doc, .xls, or .ppt files from any version pre-97 they won't open, not a big issue, but we've had some archived stuff that has been problematic since it hadn't been opened or changed in years.

authentication isn't a one time process. it continues to check at intervals in the background, unless you get a special license for a non-connected system. at least that's how I understand it. it gets more complicated each year with them trying to stay ahead of the thieves, hackers and phreaks.

I believe it all depends on the edition you purchase. I believe that all of the versions except the student/teacher version are only for 1 install. You can purchase a license agreement that allows both office use and home use, but this is a yearly fee and only done by large businesses, gov't agencies and school systems. Personally I prefer Open Office to MS Office, I'm just that cheap.

I wouldn't call it cheap. You just prefer something that works great for free as opposed to something that works OK for a lot of money! MS Office= Problems, freezes, etc. Open Office= no more empty bottles of Excedrin

sorry, going to disagree. honest folk should have no uissues with licensing. it works, invisibly and in teh bcakground, once you have activated. Their efforts are not because of honest users. they maker great efforts to be invisible to the honest user.

I like it alot on my thumb drive (http://portableapps.com/), and have begin to use it more and more. The only negative (for now) is that it can't read the XML documents windows 2007 creates (DOCX, etc...)

I personally haven't had any problems with Open Office opening anything. But then again I haven't been messing around with any XML files either. From what I have found it has opened up any MS file that I have wanted it to. And I don't remember having any problems with it crashing. But, possibly someone else has. MS on the other hand, probably all of us have had it crash multiple times.

the only two problems that I've ran into with Open Office is it doesn't open password protected files, and we had another file that had links in the index page and when it was printed it was really messed up.

Been working at a Help Desk for 11 years, and we exclusively use MS Office, and don't see the problems you all are referencing. Most of it is just hype promoting open source alternatives.

I'm not against open source, but it does have it's issues as well.

As for opening files, until they update you will begin to have more and more problems. MS Office 2007 did some MAJOR changes (improvements from my perspective) and their new file format IS XML based, that should be an advantage for open source, BUT Open Office has not yet upgraded to be able to read the new format.

As more and more upgrade to the new version, I am sure someone will upgrade Open Office as well, but since it's open source, your guess is as good as mine on how soon that will be or how well it will work.

To honestly keep up with MS office, it would require a full redesign.

Blah Blah Blah...don't trust Pastor Bill and his "help desk" answers about laptops! I've called him on a few occasions to help me clean out an ant infestation, a soda spill, and to get it to start again after only a 7 foot drop - yet he never seems to know what to do.

Not any more and he still hasn't returned any of my calls.
I had it in it's extended position with a Fresh cup of Joe, ... and "SNAP!"
Broke off like a piece of dry toast!
