This is a surprize?
I am curious what the ratio of illegal to legal immigrants is in California and Arizona...

Exactly, Mike. And how about this... I heard today on a local radio station in Orlando that the results of the last census show that 1/3 of the state of Florida is hispanic.

Illegal Immigrants in California
According to U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (CIS), an estimated 2,209,000 illegal immigrants resided in California in 2000, up from 1,476,000 in 1990. This number represented about 32 percent of the entire estimated illegal immigrant population in the United States (then estimated to be about seven million). CIS estimated that about 6.5 percent of California's population in 2000 were illegal immigrants, with a majority being from Mexico. Across the entire United States, an estimated 4.8 million illegal immigrants were from Mexico, up from two million in 1990.
Los Angeles County
close to 800,000 illegal immigrant residents in the county by 2005 (with about 320,000 in the City of Los Angeles). Accounting for the magnet that Los Angeles has been for illegal immigration, the Almanac suggests an estimated illegal immigrant population closer to one million in Los Angeles County (with close to 400,000 in the City of Los Angeles). We further estimate this population, if illegal immigration continues unabated, to grow to 1.3 million by the year 2010.
It's all in how you word it....

Jose and Carlos are panhandlers . . . . .They panhandle on different areas of town. Carlos panhandles just as long as Jose, but only collects 2 to 3 dollars each day, maybe 8 on a good day.
Jose brings home a suitcase FULL of $10 bills, drives a Mercedes, lives in a mortgage free house, and has a lot of money to spend.
Carlos says to Jose, "I work just as long and hard as you do, but how do you bring home a suitcase full of $10 bills every day?"
Jose says, "Look at your sign, what does it say?"
Carlos sign reads, "I have no work, my wife and 6 kids are hungry."
Jose says, "No wonder you don't get much money."
Carlos says, "So what does your sign say?"
Jose shows Carlos his sign . . . .It reads, "I only need another $10.00 to move back to Mexico."

We may not like it, but they are simply looking for a better opportunity for their children, like we all are.. they work at jobs many Americans won't take.. over 70% of illegal immigrants do pay taxes, w/o receiving the benefits those taxes provide.. and 90% believe it is important to learn English.. they have a beautiful culture, strong work ethic, and loving interpersonal family relationships.. they are discreet, modest, and unassuming.

The problem is the ones who don't pay taxes, and there's a bunch of them. The profile on them is that they come here, live off the grid and work their tails off for about ten years, sock away as much as they can, then go back to Mexico with the money and retire. For them it's not about a better life of their kids, it's about setting themselves up at the American taxpayer's expense.
