This is an attempt to gauge how we, as a group, perceive and process information. Please, no comments in this thread, as we have another thread (Jennifer is it really negative?) in which comments on this topic are already being discussed.

Naw, not rebellious. The poll just did not provide all the possible answers.

The only additional answer that I would add to the pole would be:
"I don't know, could you give me a hint?"

some valid points have been made though. one that comes to me is if the glass was filled up, adn then 1/2 removed; or if it was only filled 1/2 way to begin with.
Another option (and honestly would be what I would have chosen if given that option) might be -
No Answer, not enough information given to make a choice either way.

I've just been teaching my 6th graders about polls and data in math class.
I can make a poll say anything I want it to. That's why they are unscientific.

The answers are dependant on how the question is put forth.
For instance....
I ask a group of men,
"If lost, how many of you would immediately stop and ask directions?"
I could then ask the same group of men, "If lost, how many of you would be sensible enough to stop and ask directions?"
Answers would change quickly. This does
not tell us how many men would ask for directions if lost.

Perhaps I should have stated the question thus:
"In the photograph is a cylindrical container, manufactured from glass (a hard, brittle, noncrystalline, more or less transparent substance produced by fusion, usually consisting of mutually dissolved silica and silicates that also contain soda and lime, as in the ordinary variety used for windows and bottles), that contains a volume of water (a transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid, a compound of hydrogen and oxygen, H2O, freezing at 32°F or 0°C and boiling at 212°F or 100°C, that in a more or less impure state constitutes rain, oceans, lakes, rivers, etc.: it contains 11.188 percent hydrogen and 88.812 percent oxygen, by weight) that comprises 50% of the potential volume of said container. Given these facts, and these facts only, is the glass half full or half empty?"
Yes I know that polls are not scientific, they can however give a good overview of how a particular group views a subject. The question of the glass is a classical one, that is deliberately kept simple.

I think a "positive minded" person created this question in the first place. I think realistically. I could careless if it is half full or half empty. It has water in it... if I need more, I will get it... if I don't want it, I will dump it. Nothing positive or negative about. I do NOT think that way. I am real.
