wait a minute... I thought you had only the two choices. if we are free to suggest different models, then I suggest a sony. budget will decide the model.
HAD/CCD is great. and for about $300 you can get a 10x optical zoom, and large lens, as mentioned earlier is good. next best thing to a dslr (assuming a dslr cost too much)
really though - get teh camera that you will actually USE. there are several slim sony's that are small enough to take with you all the time, adn stil work great under most general circumstances.

haha...after what A2Jgirl posted, I went back online and went to the rollbacks section and found this one. I would LOVE to have one that cost $300, but this Christmas...we just can't afford it!
Maybe in a couple years!

there are several models for about half that as well. maybe I am biased, but I find the sony's processing power to be very fast and to have very little if any shutter lag. - but hay - just my opinion.

DON'T TOUCH SONY DIGITAL CAMERAS!!!
Their stuff is too proprietary. Good quality but you have to buy Sony stuff to work with it.

I have a Sony, Cyber-shot DSC S60 with 4.1 mega pixels, makes mpeg movies, 16 frame multi-burst and tons more stuff.Bought it about 2 years ago at Sears and am well satisfied with it. Close to a $300 camera but was a return, everything with it, full warranty, looked like it hadn't been used and I got it for about $125.00. No problems at all. Bought a 1 GIG Lexar memory stick at Office Depot on sale for $14.99. Makes great pictures, even to 8X10. Has a 32 MB internal memory and a Carl Zeiss lens.
Also have a Kodak that makes great pictures but after dropping it into a glass of water it eats batteries like their free. Still works, though, after it dried out for about 3 days.

Half water - half camera = full (no negatives in it; all digital)
