Worst Christmas Gift

In light of the "gift card" thread, I thought I would ask this question.
Without a doubt the worst gift I ever received was a fake aquarium fish lamp, about 3 feet tall and cylindrical, with fake fish and fake water!!! The gift givers are family and had been in my home. What possessed them to think that anything in my home suggested that I needed a fish lamp I don't know.

When I was little, my dad gave me 4 movies he recorded off the TV. (BIG spender) For my birthday one year, he gave me a Vicksburg, MS t-shirt. He has never lived in Vicksburg and neither have I. Another year, he gave me a beach towel. Yeah, he doesn't know me very well...

I used to get books.
I found out People don't like books for Christmas.
Or at least the books I get them.

I like books for Christmas. in fact, I am working on an Xmass present I bought for myself at the advice of a friend. It's called "The Climax of Prophecy".

I only wish it were available in an electronic format, I would get more reading done.
unfortunately, and I can only speak in reference to myself - most people don't have a clue what's in my library, so gift cards/certificates work best for me in that area, unless I specify in a request what I want. I am guessing that many (most?) others are like that as well.
I know the kinds of books my wife likes to read, and her favorite authors (or more accurately can find out quickly), but I don't dare buy her any, cause I don't know what she has read or not.

(just as an example)

I always hate getting ugly knick knacks that someone gets from the dollar store that look cheap and never match anything. What am I suppose to do with that?

For me (now) it's not so much that I like books, I NEED books. My scholarship covers tuition only, no books, no travel, etc. and I have to spend tons of $$$ each year just on the books I HAVE to read.
I almost always have an Amazon.com "WISH LIST" and it is almost always required reading textbooks for classes. When my wife says "So-and-so asked me what you wanted for Christmas" I just point her to Amazon!

I got one of those talking fish things that sang Christmas Carols once. I left it out in the garage. Even though I left the door open, nobody ever stole it.

I love books and love getting them for Christmas. I'm with you Cats on the dollar store knick knacks. Just tell me Merry Christmas instead.
I don't want to have to worry 5 years from now (when I pull it out of the closet) and I have a yard sale that you are going to be offended that I'm selling that same ugly knick knack for a dime.

One and only gift was a Baby Ruth candy bar.
Needless to say it didn't last long.

You've already gotten it? Heavy and interesting, no?
