The Best Christmas Gift

Postby Darling » December 9th, 2007, 11:59 am

The Best Christmas Gift - When I was thirteen, (1948) my dad bought me a small radio that could get all the good music of the day and the baseball games. It was great.

When I was in 4th grade, I built an electric lamp, and was "hooked" on making stuff go. the next year's present was the best, followed by my 6th grade Christmas present. In 5th grade, I got a crystal radio kit. I built it and spent the next year working on it to fine tune it, troubleshoot it, research and develop better and more accurate wavelength-antenna's. The next winter (just before my sixth grade Christmas) - I finally had it, and had climbed the roof, an across the garage to stretch out the exactly length and direction that I had researched would be optimal. it was. :) On my 6th grade Christmas, I got one of those (brand new at the time), 20-in-one electronics kits (to which I created my own projects that weren't on the list, and had begun to buy digital components in the sumer before 7th grade for making digital counter, and 555 timer setups). it was very special. but that el-cheepo crystal radio kit was my all time favorite, still.

I loved those kits (had the 20-in-one type) they were great, gave them to a little boy next door when I left for college, and now wish I had them for my son! They are harder to find now, Radio Shack has them, but they seem more limited.

Why do I keep hearing "blip, silence, blip, silence, blip, silence, blip" over and over in my head?

I was SO jealous of one kid who had one.

We were so excited that we woke up at like 4:30 am that year, hooked up the system and played games until the sun came up and then went back to bed. The system got a lot of use out of my family. My favorite was Space Invaders but mom loved Pac-Man (the original Atari game with a blue background that looked nothing like the arcade version).

I had one of those Radio Shack electrical wiring experiment kits. You could configure the wiring in different ways to make bulbs light, amp meters take readings, illuminate LEDs, etc. Geeky, but hours of fun for me.

My keyboard was one of my favorites. I think I have more giving highlights than receiving. I enjoy that much more.
