really bad day

Postby teach » December 12th, 2007, 3:12 pm

my day today started out with a kid yelling at me, so I threw her out of my classroom and then talked to her with a principal there and I told her how much I cared for her but that her behavior was not acceptable. She is constantly like this and I have tried to work with her because I know many teachers just treat her like dirt because of her behavior. She is ADHD too, but I don't know how that would make her argumentative. Anyway, we both ended up crying, but I don't know if it will help her behavior.

After that, One of the guidance counselors came to talk to me about a parent who called about a student I have. This particular student has slept 99% of the time he has been in my room and I have tried everything to keep him awake. I called home, but the parents are divorced, so the mother didn't relay the info to the father, and now the father wants to know why his kid is failing and then he blames me for it, and he wants his kid to do make-up work to see if he can pass.

Now, this is the first time this has happened to me and even though I should not take this personally, I do. So, I ended up crying about this. So, within the first hour of my day I have cried twice and my day is insane.

Thank the Lord that I do have a few good kids that will take up for me and help me feel better! Is it possible to love and hate teaching at the same time? I'm really just kidding, but today was quite a day....

any comments?

Swap the word "pastoring" and ask all the pastors here!

There are days that are the most incredible highs immediately followed by the most incredible lows. It is life, in all its raw glory.
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

What he said. Teaching can be an incredibly sweet gig, and the down parts of it are all the worse because of that, I believe.
Why is it that bad decisions seem to make to most interesting testimonies?

Yep, the joy of teaching.

I have said I was going to quit plenty of times.

I guess that's why 67% of teachers leave after five years to pursue other careers.

don't know about teaching in secular school, but if I couldn't teach at church, I think my head would pop. :)

Teach, I can relate to what you're going through right now! We received a child who is a special needs (meaning a behavior problem) moved into our room as a last resort. I need to ask prayer for wisdom about whether we should keep trying with this child. If we decide he goes, he is out of the program, and that would make me a little sad for him, to have had an unsuccessful school experience. It is really hard when the parents are not doing their jobs at home to try to make up for that in the classroom and at times it is unfair to ask that of teachers. Teachers of special needs kids should receive extra assistance. It takes more than one of you to effectively deal with one of them!

About the parent, don't take that personally, you have to develop a thick skin and remember you don't work for them, you work as unto the LORD. You know you are doing a good job and you are doing the right thing to allow students to receive consequences, so keep doing what you're doing. I know teachers who are hesitant to let parents know what is going on, but that doesn't help the student succeed and it isn't fair to the student or parents. Receive your pats on the back from the LORD, because you likely won't receive them from many parents or students! Bless you!
..I press on to take hold of that
for which Christ took hold of me.

Just my 2 cents...

Postby n2jesus » December 13th, 2007, 5:48 pm

No matter how hard you try or how well you teach, God gave each of us a choice (including children). If you will do your best and be consistent in what you teach and what your expectations are for every one equally, then leave the results to God . Stick with your convictions on boundaries. I was taught, that no matter what has happened to you, what disease you have or any other problem of this life, you are required to do the right thing. And if you don't, there are always consequences. This generation is raising a bunch of pampered, spoiled rotten, disrespectful bunch of brats that feel entitled to be catered to. And please don't get me wrong, I know there are still parents who are still trying to raise good kids It's a great chance it's not going to get any better in this world. That is going to make a teacher's job harder than it is already. If you feel called by God to teach and you have the guts to pursue it, I have great respect for you. Do your best, God will take care of the rest.

Yep and as one of the burned and churned, I fully understand that comment.

Maybe one day God will push me back into it, but it'll defintely be a push
