Wow, I was shocked this morning...

One of my students who many of the teachers don't like because of his behavior. He's loud and can be a pest (really). I even swapped a teacher a student so he could come to my room twice a day.

He came to school almost everyday even when he didn't have a test. The students can stay home. I even called his mom and told her he didn't have to come because he didn't have any tests. I was applauded by the other teachers for this act. But it didn't last for long because he came to school anyway. Everyday, the only student in his class for the most part. Some came for other test and stuff but he stayed all day. We have told him, "Dyques, do NOT come to school on Tuesday because you do not have a test." One even said, "Don't come tomorrow because we are not serving lunch." His dad is not around and doesn't have anything to do with him. I have heard him say in conversation with other students that he hates his dad. He lives with his mom and grandparents. His mom was in Special Ed when she went to school here. One of my co-workers who will be retiring at the end of this year even taught his mom.

Anyway, so what happened this morning?

This is make-up day so there shouldn't be any students unless you have a test to make up.

So what happened this morning?

I was sitting at my desk when someone comes walking through. I didn't have it locked b/c I'll be in and out doing stuff so I am keeping it unlocked.

Anyway, I was sitting at my desk when someone comes walking in smiling from ear to ear. "Hey Mr. Cook. I'm just here to bring you a present because your my favorite teacher." It was just a cup with some candy in it, but I thought wow.

As much as I get on him about his work making him redo his assignments when I can't read them. Telling him to get back to work. Telling him he can not get on the computer because he has work to do. And if he doesn't complete, (I make him bring me his work so I can look at. He has a tendancy to just turn in something that is not finished) I make him finish it. I do compliment him on his reading and stuff that he does good on. And I get on him when he tries to turn in junk.

Anyway, I know it's not important but it is days like this, Wendy, that you are glad for what you do.

You have no idea...

You have no idea what kind of an impact you may be making on him. You may be the only one to show him how a man/dad should be. Good job, sweetie!

You may be the one person who has cared enough to be tough on him. Your influence may be just what turns him around. Sounds like you're the type of teacher that may see him back 20 years from now accomplished and crediting you for it.

Thank you so much for caring like that we need more teachers like you.
