My how times have changed.
Hard Disk that stored a whopping 5MB of data and you could lease it for just over $3,000 a month.

One of my first good jobs was with Shell OIl Co. They trained me as a key punch operator. the equipment was leased from IBM, huge stuff, sorters, reproducers, 605's I think they were called.

I remember my first real computer. Compaq 486 with a whopping 8M RAm and a 250 MB hard Brive. Cost me over $800. That was not 1956, but about 1993

my first hard drive was a 5 meg full height drive. cost $7,500!! my 64kRAM PC with one single sided floppy drive was top of the line for "personal PC's" at the time, it was a couple handfuls of thousands of dollars on it's own.

I knew that 5 meg of hard drive space was a luxury, and that there was no way I could fill that much space (once I hacked to OS to recognize it), but it was a geek-thing that I "needed"! :)

it was less than a year or so later that I downloaded the entire KJV ASCII files at 110 baud from a mainframe in Texas, and filled much of that space! woohoo!! I had an online Bible in the 80's and when I started my dial in BBS system, it was the ONLY one that had the Bible available to download. I was famous! many dial up software manufactures had my BBS number in their sample-dial-lists, even. TBBBBS (The Bible Board Bulletin Board System). Had to by a second phone line and modem, but by then we were communicating at 1200 baud - super-speed!
