Open Office + Palm

Ok, I got a Palm TX for Christmas and am trying to make good use of it, so I am trying to set up things so that I can have my expenses recorded on it in the same format that my wife normally records it on our computer so that at the end of the month(or various times throughout) she can just look up the file on the computer, instead of what we have been doing(me reading things off to her, her calculating things up, and then giving the numbers to me).
The problem that I am coming across, is that we use open office, and for some reason, even though we save the files in Excel format, things still don't transfer right. Some changes that I make on the Palm don't transfer to the PC after hotsyncing, and the numbers from either the PC or the palm don't show up right. From palm to pc, they turn into XXXX. From pc to palm, they turn into time stamps.
Anybody with any advice would help.
Thanks and God bless
