We are in the early planning stages of going to the Assembly again this year. We went 2 years ago and took along 10 teen agers from our state and didnt get to see much besides the blocks around the Gaylord center. This year, if we go, it will be just, my family (me, my wife and 2 sons)

I would really like to spend at least 1 or 2 days enjoying something other than the days proceedings. Are there any good recommendations (museums, Theme Parks, water parks, etc ) close enough that would be a fun family day?

We live about 5 miles or so from the site where the Assembly will be held. Maybe Wen and I can help.

I would tell you to go tour the Ryman Auditorium, but I know you hate country music (even so, it's still a pretty cool place to see)

If you're into history, not too far outside of Nashville is the Hermitage, President Andy Jackson's estate. I enjoyed that when I went.

Go over to the Opryland Hotel, the enormity and spectacle of it is pretty cool. If you want to pay way too much, you can even ride a river boat inside the hotel.

If you want an awesome breakfast, go over to the Pancake Pantry over near the Vanderbilt campus. Be prepared to wait in line though if you go on a weekend.

Nashville is one of my favorite cities.

Unfortunately the Gaylord corp. demolished its awesome amusement park, Opryland, years ago. The nearest one now is in Pigeon Forge, TN. There is a lot of country music-related tourist stuff (which I'm sure you'll take a pass on :D ) but you'd enjoy sight-seeing at the Opryland hotel.

Paully, if you will give me enough advance notice, I will arrange some things for you. I can give you a pontoon boat ride on a beautiful lake that will show you Johnny Cash's house that burned and Roy Orbison's house and a lot more.

Then I can take you to the Hermitage....just a stone's throw from my house...for a great historical tour. Then there are all the battlegrounds around the Nashville area from the Civil War era.

If you would like, I can make arrangements for your family to see and hear a live recording session at one of the studios.....maybe with my son doing the producing......just depends on when it is.

You can take in a Sounds (minor league) ball game not far from the Sommet Center( formerly Gaylord)

There are some serious museums around town.....

Just let me and FQ know in advance and we will be glad to help you out. But then of course the best part of your trip will be to attend Sunday services at CEDAR RIDGE CHURCH!! .

Don't be too excited about the Sounds because the city government hasn't been since I have been alive. The stadium is a dump, but it is baseball and you can't take anything away from that.

Ron, can I get that tour also?

The Sounds stadium is NOT a good AAA stadium but the team consistently puts a great product on the field. it is a fun night at the park and most of the contending Brewers have been through there in the last few years. I highly recommend it and I will host you there if you want to go!

There is a science museum very close to the assembly site that would be good for the kids. The zoo is very close as well. It's not too big, nice, and has a great play area for the kids.

Isn't that right beside the Sounds? That could be a whole day of fun right in one spot.

How far out of Nashville you wanna drive (if any at all?).

Lots of Civil War history. You can go up the hill from the Assembly meeting place to the state Capitol and compare it to civil war pictures of it fortified with canon.

Then you could go get IMAPK to take you up to the Bell Witch cavern.

Cats,
The Adventure Science Museum is very close to Greer Stadium, but Metro Zoo is farther down Nolensville Rd., between Thompson Lane and Harding Place. For it's size it is a really good zoo.

They could go to Radner Lake if they like nature walks.

I have been to nice parks & not so nice parks, but like FQ said, baseball is baseball and there is nothing like it on a summer night.
