What's In A Name? . . .

Two years ago they were "Supervisors." Then one night the Corporate Title Fairy can to visit. The next morning, although their jobs had not changed, they were no longer Supervisors, they were "TECHNICAL CELL LEADERS." The company I work for uses cellular manufacturing, thus the use of the word "Cell." Well, the old girl was at it again! They are now - (drum roll please) "Manufacturing Focus Managers!" They still do the same job they did two years ago, at the same pay rate on the Pay Rate Scale. Why is it that some companies are so enamored with change that they change everything just to be changing it. It is a rare occasion where the change actually creates an improvement. Most often it has little or no effect that could be seen as positive, and more often than not, it has an adverse effect.
Just one of the thoughts running through my head tonight.

TW, great topic. For many years I was a Secretary, and proud to be one, especially a male secretary in a predominately female field. Then one day I was informed of my new title: Administrative Assistant. I hated it.

I work at a college, departments, positions programs are constantly in naming flux. It is hard even to keep up with computer inventory, because by the time we get something installed, the name of the department changes, or the reporting structure or something.
The amazing thing is often we'll see alot of money spent on renovations and launches just to keep up with the new naming.
I actually commented to someone in the development department a year or so ago, because they were the only department that hadn't changed their name since I started...They are now called "College Relations".

I saw one business card for a painter and his job title read "Pigment Application Specialist." My favorite title ever on a card was "Director of stuff nobody else wants to do."

When I was in high school I worked part-time at a local printing company. The air conditioners were mounted in the walls high up near the ceiling, and the old man who owned the place ran hot and cold all day... he had me climbing up several times a day to turn the A/C up or down. I told people I was the "Circulation Manager" there.
