COGOP name change

I know that changing the Church of God of Prophecy name would not be a fix all, and it would in fact take a while to do. But I'd like to mostly see (in this poll) if you think the time has come for a new name.
So please consider,...is the name Church of God of Prophecy a name that is helpful or unhelpful in your efforts in bringing people in to your local churches? Do you feel proud saying "I go to the church of God of Prophecy."
Before we get on an old rant - I know that many of your the signs don't have the official name anyway - and I wonder if that isn't evidence in itself that we need to change it from something that sounds old to something more suitable?
I will go out on a limb here and say that the COGOP name does not mean what it used to mean and I'd like to see some serious consideration from the powers that be to look into a new name change to represent a new effort of repentance and change.

This is interesting you post this...yesterday when I met some folks in choir at church, I told them I used to go to church at the Church of God of Prophecy. I then said I was embarrassed about the name. They said "Yeah, sounds like a cult."

To which I responded, "You don't even know."

And we all shared a good laugh and we hit it off well.

We've discussed it before, but I'm all for it. The "of prophecy" part stirs up alot of questions. And I love the phone calls...... 'would you please prophesy over me". I want to say sure, just give me your credit card number. LOL!

well im not COGOP yet it would seem many already have done this in a sense, as you said many of the signs say many things other then COGOP. I do see time to time something like this

So that seems that some did it regardless, so being that it does not feel it is the church of God "of prophecy" in other words the church that was prophetically spoken of I could see why. However it saddens me a little But I do understand why.

Again I am only commenting because it is my heritage but im not a member. Im curious to see others comments.
It is really interesting to see so many different views. I know of churches that operate just as we do for the most part. Others kinda still close to the old ways and very much care about HQ and being a World wide Organization, then MANY that really dont seem to care about HQ or the assembly but rather seem to more operate kinda indepently in the sense there local church is what is important not the church as a whole and for the most part dont believe much of what is still considered teachings. Im curious to see how things will go.
I am hoping the assembly will be online again this year so i can see some of it.

I think too, that the name "prophecy" does cause questions if not fear from some people.
For instance...we had a Revival about 2 months ago.. this black gentleman came in our doors, he had seen the sign outside along with the name of the church advertising "Restoration Revival."
He said he lived in the neighborhood and was looking for a church if need be, he could walk to.
But he was hestitate about coming in the door. First thing was the name "prophecy" and the second was, he was entering what he thought was an all white church.
After asking a few questions about the doctrine, to which he thought, thats cool; he walked in to where many blacks were.
He has found a home church...his back ground is "COGIC."

But I can see the name of Prophecy holding people back..we live in a time that it seems everyone has a prophecy to tell. Prophets are springing up everywhere.
I just wish that judge had of let us keep our original name. But someone had to have a name change, I suppose. :(

I voted maybe. I suggest at least a partial change.

I think COGOP definitely needs some type of name change to help solidify it's identity change. Yet, I think it needs to maintain some form of Church of God or something of a similar vein to maintain overall heritage as well.

So, I agree that the "of Prophecy" designation no longer seems to fit well with the stated beliefs of the denomination.

Get some mean lawyers so when Karen sues for trademark infringement she can't take the flag... for starters.

I attempted to have our local church be host for series of seminars dealing with Media Technologies in the church. The answer I got was they felt the name of my church would scare off people from attending the conference. They were going to be doing some advertising in several church related magazines and wanted to appeal to a broader audience.
