computer/ wireless network key question.

Postby TC » July 21st, 2008, 4:22 am

OK I am trying to help a neighbor add a laptop to his wireless connection at his house. Laptop sees connection but needs the wep key. He is running everything on xp (I think) I thought I could go to his wired connection and use a jump drive to save his wep key and then transfere to another computer, but where do I find the key to copy?

I thought it was in the configuration of the wireless modem?

Is he using a wireless router? If they don't have the documentation that came with the router - you can usually download it from the manufacturer's website. They can typically help with finding that. Sometimes they will include a utility program that will copy all that info to a file you can copy to a jump drive & run on the new computer.

I believe you usually set the WEP key when you set up the router. To access that after the fact you'll probably have to check the router setup page (again - documentation will probably help you find out how to do that quicker). (i.e. - on a Linksys router you type the IP address of the router in the internet explorer browser from a computer attached to the router - usually 192.168.1.1 by default).

Linksys?

Postby FLgirl » July 21st, 2008, 11:31 am

I have a linksys router and I have to open the router's program and go to add a device, it then tells me the key to use. Then I go to the computer I'm trying to connect, tell it to detect the wireless network, then enter the key when asked to do so. I have 2 desktop computers with USB wireless network adapters and my husband's laptop on our network. Hope that helps.

Alot of times the WEP key is the serial number on the router. I have 2 different routers and both use the serial number as the WEP key.

TC, Pianoman is ontrack.

type in the 192.168.1.1 in IE or whatever. A Menu should come up or actually first a login screen. try admin admin for name and pword.

If that does not work find your wireless router manual either in you box or online. find out the default name and password.

If your router in WEP enabled someone did this when they installed it.

Its turned off usually by default.

Once you get into the menu of the router Poke around look for security settings etc.

You can set the WEP to whatever you want it to be.

If say a RR tech installed your router they get fancy with a password.
Numbers and letters in weird combos.

Curretntly I have mine set to none. Its open . I can see 3 other networks in my neighborhood but they are to weak in signal strength to grab one.
