Since my wife doesn't come on this site...(she knows about it but doesn't come here) I thought I would ask.

She needs one for getting around here. She just moved here to marry me and isn't quite familiar with the area yet. I thought that this might help her get out and about.

Thing of it is that we ain't got a lot of money...so if I can't afford one for Christmas...well...they always got maps and mapquest and just time.

I seen where they had them advertized in the store for black friday for relatively inexpensive prices...are these OK? or are we gonna be frustrated with trying to use them.

I don't know anything about them except that they talk to you as you drive down the road and give you directions...somehow you are supposed to be able to put your destination in them and it will steer you there.

If any of you have one and like it or know anything about them....could you post or PM me.

I have a Garmin and let me say....it is the best invention in my lifetime.....at least for me.

It shows a rolling road map with your car on it as you drive.

You type in an address and it gives you idiot proof directions....verbal and written i.e. "in 3.5 miles turn right". Then in 3 miles...."in .5 miles turn right." Then, you hear a little alert sound that says, "turn right here."

Wanna know whats around? You could be in the middle of having no clue where you are (as on a road trip) and hit the button that says, "Food". It will show you a list of all food places, what type of food, and the distance to food location. You simply place your finger on the one you like and it calculates your road map and starts telling you verbal and written directions to the place.

It also has attractions, lodgings, shopping, hospitals, and etc that work the same way as the food button. The hotel one is super nice because you can see a list of hotels with numbers. You can simply call the numbers from your cell and check hotel prices as you travel. Keeps you from pulling into a random hotel and not liking the rate and leaving to look for another.

I guarantee you will not be unhappy with this purchase. It has bailed me out more than once.

Garmin Nuvi is a awesome deal. I think if you look enough you could still find it for aorund $199.99 instead of $300

I had "Tom Toms" in all our vans and I did not like it near as much as the garmin.

Hope that helps.

I have yet to purchase a GPS system but have been researching them for a few months. Everyone I have talked with has recommended the Garmin. I went to Best Buy last month to look at a Tom Tom and the salesman said that people have been bringing them back. I believe I will purchase a Garmin after we get back to working a full week at work. Hope this helps you.

God bless.

My folks have a Garmin and love it so much that when they traded in their Cadillac this week for a new one, they got a better deal on the new one without nav. They didn't want to part with their Garmin since they were use to it.

I could not survive without my nav! I can get lost pulling out of the driveway!

Well, I'm part Cherokee, so I can smell which way I'm going. I don't need no stinkin' nav. I can also tell time by the sun within 10 minutes of actual time. (So can most of us, but I like to say that to my wife, who has NO sense of time.)

Garmin.

I have been through 3 generations of them and have never gotten lost. I don't prefer the ones with all the bluetooth/mp3 bells and whistles, though. and the newer ones have wireless/satellite access for real time weather updates, traffic updates, and some with emergency vehicle updates as well. The really kewl ones will even let you tap into traffic cam images!

Dad has a Garmin, and I'm getting a Garmin Nuvi. I'd recommend laying out the extra cash to get the text to speech version, that tell you the street name you are turning onto, and not just "Turn at next right".

I am a quarter Chippewa, but I am a gadget-geek, so have it on all the time when driving, just to see the kewl maps! :) hehheee wish I could get a heads-up-display version. :) woohoo!!
