You're tongue must be raw.

It is. I've been eating too many sunflower seeds this weekend. Thanks for your prayers.

You desire prayers or do you just use the idea of them to mock?

Do you ask because you care or because you want to mock? I don't desire prayers, no. But I do desire the well-wishes that believers have when they care and extend prayers.

So what you're saying is you prefer the care of a person who says "I'll pray" over the possibility of a prayer being answered?

They've pretty well dropped that in Alabama's holiday name-giving. The stalwart state employees still refer to it as that, though, as they enjoy the 3 day weekend. He, too, was a great man, though.

Gerald, I shouldn't have mentioned prayer on this board, and especially not in a comment to you. If I ever get the impression that you don't have a chip on your shoulder about me, perhaps we can talk about my views of prayer over a cup of coffee sometime. I'm not here to express my views about religion, and I shouldn't have taken that pot shot.

I recognize Rober E. Lee day, as well as MLK Jr. day.
I wish everyone a happy celebration of whichever they respectively observe, if not both!
Deo Vindice AND
Liberty for all!!!

My mom was born in Mississippi, and her extended relatives live there. They claim relation to Robert E. Lee. I've never sought to corroborate that, but I count it most likely to be a family myth.
I have read presidential biographies up through Franklin Pierce. There were southern Democratic presidents I might otherwise have liked, but it has been hard for me to conceive of a truly great man fighting on behalf of the southern slave power, so I have generally had low opinions of Democratic presidents during the mid-nineteenth century.
Do you know what view Lee held of the slave power? Where did he stand philosophically with regard to slavery? While I can acknowledge a man's tactical genious or courage to fight for his views, I have a difficult time considering him great if he fights primarily for a morally bankrupt cause. I probably need to read a hefty biography of Lee to get a good take on him.

Tim, though I seldom post on these subjects, I think that you would have a better view of Gen Robert E. Lee if you did that. You might also learn that many of the Northerns had their own slaves. That the real reason was of States Rights.
Gen Lee's birthday was celebrated many years before MLK Jr. If you will read about him (not of the last days rethink history), I think you will find just what a great man he really was.
