I hear he's the first black president, then I hear, his mixed.
Do we class him as black or mixed? What his view?

Depends on who he is talking to.

Mariah Carey relates with her black heritage, as well as many other mixed celebrities.

If you really think about it, Obama could have run on a tremendous platform as the great uniter: Black and White heritage; Christian and Muslim background; meager beginnings to relate to the lower and middle classes and a current ability to relate to the more elite; international ties to family making him more "global"

But he chose a more polarizing stance, in my estimation. It seems that a real opportunity was missed (regardless of political position).

I know, It's like those of dark skin see him as black and some see him as mixed because of this mother been white and his father been black (indonesian) Someone I was speaking with asked why some only saw him as black when he is mixed. I don't have an answer

A great middle man. That's what I was thinking. Between his color,religion and polities which started at his inaugration. Whether that's good or bad.

His father was from Africa not Indonesia. His step dad was from Indonesia.

I have family that is in a bi-racial marriage. The children are legally listed as the mother's race. My cousin has 2 "caucasian" children though they are half black.

So.. unless that is a state to state thing.. he is legally his mother's race, white.

If memory serves me correct, and it has been a long time, Hawaii allows you to enter anything you want to enter under "RACE/ETHNICITY" because most people here are multi-racial... some claim 7 or 8 parts to their mixture.

well all his life I assure you people would say he was black where ever he went. I have 4 black cousins (half white half black) but nobody recognizes that they see them as black.
So that is why most refer to him as black. If this was the old days he would have been treated the same as other blacks.

I had asked, what was his view. If he says his black, then he leases out the white part, If white he leaves the black part out. Today when everybody wants to find their heritage and find that connection would not he be of both. Mixed. We have a mixed president not only a black one.

In 1989 I think, They started going with the mother's race.

I got ya Yes he does leave that out, he is actually our first bi-racial president Half white half black.

Well, "America's first non-caucasian President" or "America's first President of mixed racial heritage" doesn't have quite the historic ring that "America's First Black President" does, does it?

I have a feeling like all other presidents. We may like him now, but in the coming years we may want another one. Some say Oh yes, A black man is president now things will change for the better. IMO We will find out more than what we would like IMO. Just consider his beliefs.
