A. J. Creel Passes

I have no details other than he died last night and memorial/funeral is tomorrow in Rome, Georgia.

I talked about him in a sermon a few weeks ago. He was a great man of God.

I pray God's blessings on his family. I love them all.

Were there really so many people named A. J. in early church workers or was that an afectation??

I can think of three "A J"s off the top of my head.

His name was Amos Joshua Creel......not Ambrose Jessup.....

He went by AJ before he became a christian .....I am told.

A. J. Coulter.....I don't know about.....

I have a friend named A. J. SHE didn't know anything about AJT...

One of our most beloved ministers, and a dear friend, has gone to his reward. I just talked with his precious wife, Dorothy. Brother Creel left us in his sleep. The past several months have been difficult for him, but he is now at rest. [i] "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them" (Rev. 14:13)[i].

Bro Creel was my first SO. He was very kind to a young wet nose kid. Very up lifting. Our prayers are with his family.

Rev. Amos Joshua Creel, age 89, of Rome, passed away Tuesday morning, February 10, 2009, at his residence.

Rev. Creel was born in Dora, AL on June 25, 1919, son of the late Rev. Chester V. Creel and the late Pearl Carlisle Creel. He was also preceded in death by a son, Alan Creel, by a sister, Betty Love, and by a brother, Homer Creel. An ordained minister in the Church of God of Prophecy, Rev. Creel was ordained as a Bishop in 1947. He served as Pastor, State Overseer, and Evangelist all over the United States and overseas during his ministerial service of over 70 years. He retired from Pastoral Ministry in 1990, following 8 years as Pastor of the Church of God of Prophecy in Dawsonville. Rev. Creel attended the North Rome Church of God here in Rome.

Survivors include his wife, the former Dorothy Louise Reese, to whom he was married on January 1, 1947; a daughter, Mrs. Donna Brooks, and her husband, Rev. Bert Brooks, Rome; a son, Rev. Darrell Creel, and his wife, Joy, Rome; 3 grandchildren, Ms. Linda Creel, Nashville, TN, Mrs. Beth Kline, Lithia Springs, and Nathan Creel, Rome; a great grandchild, Piper Kline, Lithia Springs; 2 sisters, Ms. Zella Creel, Cleveland, TN, and Mrs. Oneeta Andrews, Harriman, TN; nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday evening, February 11, 2009, at 7pm at the North Rome Church of God with the Pastor, the Rev. Harold Jones, Mr. Creel's son-in-law, the Rev. Bert Brooks, and the Rev. Randy Howard officiating. Interment services will be held on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at 11am at the graveside in Rome Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the North Rome Church of God on Wednesday evening from 5 until 7pm. At other hours, they may be contacted at each of their respective homes.

Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Rome, GA has charge of the funeral arrangements.

I remember him at the GA's loving everybody and blowing kisses.

Bro. Creel was interim pastor at our church a short while many
many years ago. I don't remember him - but I do remember
that he gave everyone a little Bible that had a wooden cover
on the front & back. Anyone else remember those?
He was SO in Missouri at the time.

Few left like him. He was my Overseer in Texas. I respected him greatly..And I will miss him. But find comfort in knowing he is now rejoicing in His reward. And indeed has been caught in the middle of the "SMACK"

Bro. Creel used to say ....." I feel like heaven and earth kissed, and I got caught in the middle of the smack".

That's all it was....but the young uns probably don't know about that line.

Heard him say it at least a hundred times. Great memories of a great man.

A friend in an email today said he was "different," but they still liked him. Well, that "difference" (I thought, "compared to what?") made a huge difference in me.

He was my favorite Overseer in Alabama, serving during my crucial teen years. His son became my closest and dearest friend. And, my goodness - with Amos, you got Dorothy - without question, IMHO, the greatest youth camp director in COGOP history. It was one night during a lake-side service at one of her camps in Oak Mountain State Park that I knelt and, through streaming tears, accepted my call into the music ministry.

I have since said that Dorothy Creel was the first person God used to validate me as an individual with a real purpose in life.

A great reward awaits these spiritual giants. Thank God for the legacy they leave behind.
