Statement of conservative principles

I recently attended a conference where I heard Michael Farris, chancellor of the conservative Patrick Henry College speak. Mr. Farris shared his sadness in the fact that the Republican party had departed from the conservative principles that had made that party strong in the past. He also shared that he had drafted a Statement of Principles that he believes outlines conservative principles long held by the people of this country, and until recently the Republican Party.

With his approval, I decided to join the fray and make a Facebook fan page about the Principles and endeavor to get others to read them and give feedback about them.

I would like to ask ALL of you to go to the Facebook page where these ideas can be found, read them and vote in the poll there (if you are a Facebook member). I would also like to ask you to TELL YOUR FRIENDS about it!

The people hold the key to returning America to the beliefs of the founders and the conservative principles which made our country great. PLEASE visit the page I mentioned above and share it with your friends. The more we spread the word, the quicker change will embrace the conservative movement!

Way too limited in scope. The failure to demand the restraint of government and the insistence on a set of moral virtues as a guiding political theory is what I think "conservatism" is a dead political horse. Conservatism under this declaration is still big government ideology. The call for limited government rings nicely, but still fails to slam the door closed on any idea that government has the authority to dictate, tax and spend on matters that deplete the privacy and wealth of any individual. This declaration specifies the pet hot-button issues that now define conservatism, but wholly fails to demand that government be not only limited but put under constraints in order to exercise its rule. It never once recognizes the sovereignty of the individual over his own life and property and liberty. These failures are more than mere omissions. They are systemic assumptions that government is okay as long as it is doing what I want it to do, even if it is big in doing it. That's no better, fundamentally, than liberalism.

I say bravo for getting this into the public debate. I will take incremental steps... stepping toward foundational conservative principles than the blithering fall for any crisis path we're on now ... ANY DAY.

The key is a strong leader that can push it and WE stand behind regardless of how the media spins it, trashes, or divides. It's going to take true grit and fortitude on our part to not abandon them to please the opposing side that we're hurting or offending them... [ or enter the global drama of the day here ].
