I'm curious to hear what teachers have to say about this. I know what I think about it (hint: it's right beside national health care, in my opinion).

1. One, two or three more hours of school time a day will not make kids better educated in the "Three R's" nor will it increase their skill level on any task. I don't know of many teachers complaining of "not enough time in the day to teach". Good grief, seems from anecdotal evidence at least, that some percentage of kids -- a substantial one -- is on some kind of ADD medicine. Cooping them in for more of the day will certainly cure them, won't it?
2. This is a design to separate children from home. That's all it is. It increases the power of the education lobby and unions, and weakens the family and the authority of the parent. My child will be out of school at 3 P.M. if I have to come in and get her out. I'm not going to let the government tell me how much "schooling" she is to have; what helps her is what she learns, not having more hours she's in the grips of government custodians.
3. This heightens the sinister nature of Obama's speech to the schoolkids a few weeks back. This is a planned programmatic takeover of the home by the government. If my local school or district develops its own plan, not motivated by any carrot or stick from the Federal government, I might consider it. But, that's never going to happen. So, we're back to the only other option --- obeisance to the Federal power or resistance. They want your children more than they want anything else. Like people say of their firearms, though, they'll have to pry mine from my cold, dead fingers. Obama, Federal Government, NEA, public education lobby --- you don't get my daughter.

As a school employee who is already being furloughed 3 days this year, they're gonna have a hard time convincing me to put in longer hours, or more days.

How do all the underpaid teachers feel about this?
my question is, where will the $$ come from? In our distctrict, they have cut the majority of sports in the middle school and many JV sports at the high school level, including football. Just to save money.

The money will undoubtedly come from a tax on school lunches and private school tuitions.

Education comes from quality, not quantity.
What needs to be said has already been said above me.
Unless I am mistaken, Obama's kids go to private school. Private schools are not under government rules...................His kids won't be going to school longer.
One of the things he said was...longer hours, longer school years, and weekends too. One of his brilliant reasonings? Kids need somewhere safe to go!

Even if they have the money ten-fold to do it doesn't justify doing it. In fact, there is no set of facts imaginable that could possibly justify it. This GGW ---- Government Gone Wild.

They will definitely be paying me a lot more if they expect me to remain a teacher.
