Considering one can receive unemployment benefits for 99 weeks now why would many folks return to work even if they could (and some can)?

The incentive to work is taken away when you can sit at home for two years and draw a check.

well if that was taken away some families would be homeless. I know many people that are looking for a job and can NOT find one. without unemployment and food stamps they would not be able to feed their family.....

one love,

I don't see the lack of jobs stopping the illegal Mexicans from working. One of the biggest problems is that too many American workers believe that they are to good to do menial labor. In the 48 years that I was in the work force I never collected unemployment. I applied once, but had a job before the two week waiting period was over. If your willing to get dirty there is work in most areas of the country.

They work cheaper because they don't think they are too good to work for those wages. Now, I'm a former union member and officer, and I believe in a fair wage for the worker. However, not everybody can make $20.00 per hour. Some will make more, and some will make less. If it wasn't for the government dole then the American workers would take the lower paying jobs until they could work their way back up.

Don't come crying to me that you don't have a job when there is work but you think you are to good to do it. You have a college degree? Then eat your diploma. If there is work available get off your backside and do it.

I do not feel that is a correct analogy at all.
I was making over 80k and had to go on unemployment before. I have done every job known to man. I was putting on roofs as a child. I was only on unemployment for about 2 weeks and got a great offer.
NOW I know some that only know certain trades and are trying to find work and cant.... They maybe be able to work at taco bell and then lose their home, not feed the family or do all they can to make at least 10 bucks a hour. Say what you will but when you have a family to feed and 6 dollars a hour will make you homeless if you were making 75k and up. That is not being to good to work there, it is knowing you will go from bad to worse.
I know some in NC on unemployment that would love a walmart job or ANYTHING but cant find anything. IN these cases Thank God for unemployment.

Yes some abuse it I agree but before we all throw stones any of us may need it one day!!!!!!!!!!

TW , the fact is the stock market is up. why? more money in the bank for corp. america. they are not spending it. they are not creating jobs. they are not expanding. just sitting on the money so the stock holders will not fire the ceo. silly to say the work is there. its not. very small amount of companies are hiring. retail is not even hiring. which is funny to me because they were projecting black friday to be up 6 percent. greed my friend, greed.

If anyone has collected unemployment benefits for any length of time, they know that it is no fun. Minimum pay that affords you subsistence while bills pile up is a recipe for misery, not a blissful vacation on the government teat.

And, while there are those who are "too good" to work at menial jobs, there are those who can't afford to work a job that doesn't pay enough to cover bills they can't get out of, and need the time they would put in on one, or two, or three low paying jobs to find one that lets them meet their obligations.

It's NOT a simple problem, but rather a lot of problems that have piled up. I do believe, however, that the first step to solving them would be removing illegal labor from the equation. Then management can't keep from paying a commensurate wage for jobs that are unpleasant, onerous. and/or physically dangerous because there are people who are desperate enough to work them for less than they are worth. That won't happen for a lot of reasons, but it should, and discussions like this will continue as long as illegal labor exists as a club for management to use.

America works on Profit. It's absolutely nothing wrong with profit. I own my own business and pray to God that he continue to bless and profit my small business. When I profit.. I can employ, spend on goods and bless my Christian brothers/sisters. Without profit I can't do anything other than limited service combined with lip service.

The reason nobody is spending right now is uncertainty. No stability and the USA is in debt up to it's eye balls. Where are the adults in all this overwhelming debt? While trying to calm China's fears... Obama himself said that if rampant spending continues as the debt just balloons exponentially we run the risk of a double dip recession here in the USA.

Combine that with his increased threats of new carbon taxes from the Global Warming Hoax to rising business costs for Health Care with added individual threats of fines and prison if they fail to comply. These crazy tax and spend tactics will cause any family, group, business, etc to act conservative with it's budget.

Uncertainty and protecting investment. That's the reason Gold is skyrocketing and the dollar is dirt. Remove these extreme tax shackles from our businesses and watch them thrive. It works every time it's tried.

i agree that business owners have a right to make a profit, but not at the expense of mankind!!! it is the business owners that will pull this country out of recession. they will either put people back to work or not. they refused for years in the great depression. it took gov. to step in and force it in many ways. that should not have to happen. less money in the bank and more money invested into america is what should happen right now. its time to put their money where their mouth is. step up or get out.

May I say that our company has hired some 20 employees over the past 2 months which doubled our work force and we need to hire even more. We have work lined up to get us through Spring which is a rarity in our industry. Normally we are all sitting at home this time of year twiddling our thumbs and worrying about getting through Christmas.

The economy aint great but there is work out there. I'll tell you one industry that many folks could go into today and find a job BUT they will have to work their rear off and that is the cable TV industry. Get a job with Comcast, Cox, Time Warner, AT&T as an employee of go to work for one of their contractors. People want their cable and internet and will go without food to pay for it. There is always a demand for installers and as a contractor's employee you can make as little or as much as you like because you get paid by the install. I know because I made a killing working in that industry BUT I worked my tail off.

Now of course some folks would have to lower themselves to the standard of being a cable dawg but a real man will do what is necessary to feed his family.

If govt would release businesses from the increased tax burden they would put more men and women to work seeking greater profit. Stability, not increased tax instability is what they need to be focusing on.

Govt is the problem now. The elites that make policies while disconnected with working Americans. Promising things that they can't afford or effectively even manage. Where are the elected leaders in these groups to say, "NO?"

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/art ... AD9BNJTC80

Prime Example: Like in California where average Americans are getting 10% extra now taken from their take home paycheck because the liberal elites failed to effectively manage the resources they had. Live in the budget they had. So now because they can't manage or screw it up... it's now the workers fault to cover the difference.

10% less they are doing without this Holiday Season.

Let's hold the Govt greedy hands just as responsible as you perceive businesses as.

Agree with all that you said there Mr. Mac.

Capitalism is not meant to have as much government intervention as we currently have in this country.
