awwww!!!! He is one of the people who have had an impact on my life. I had the pleasure of meeting him and his wife back in 91. Still have a cassette tape of her singing. My prayers are with the family; I know he must be celebrating in heaven.
He was unique

One of the great ones. He was great to me and strongly impacted my ministry. A unique man who had a solid influence across cultures and languages. A God called evangelist. My first encounter with him was as the evangelist for a city wide crusade in the Youth for Christ building in Kansas City, Mo. in 1969 or 1970. I thought his ministry was powerful and I never lost that opinion. My prayers are with Sis. Matthews and Kim and her family.

I first met Brother Matthews when He and Roberta were first married and Brother Matthews was in revival at the High Point, NC church. The pastor was Rufus Nunnery and my dad invited the Matthews to stay in our home during the revival. This was in the 50's. Brother and Sister Matthews have had the same sweet spirit throughout their lives and I will always cherish the memories that God has blessed me with from the Matthews.
God bless the family.

Bro. Elwood was a wondeful overseer, friend, and a man of intergity, a man who knew no strangers, loved the church, and could make you laugh anytime he wanted to. His sermons were never boring, and he could get a crowd excited, and when he boosted an offering, pocketbooks & checkbooks were open, and the plates were filled.
He was a blessed man, he and Sister Roberta have been a blessing to the church of God.
Bishop Matthews has probally started a Revival up in heaven, or as he once said, a Revolution.
Our loss is certainly Heaven's gain.
Heaven will be a litte brighter & exciting now that the " Silver Fox" has arrived.
Our prayers are with Sis. Matthews, Kim and the rest of the family.
Until we meet again, Bishop, thanks again for the advice, love & encouragement you gave me.
Pastor Ronnie Bradford

small world...
I visited my hometown this past March, and one of my best high school friends goes to that church - she bragged on how much she loved her church and the senior pastor. Did he attend this church?

Man, I loved Elwood Matthews...I enjoyed watching and listening to him as a young person and then was honored to have him and Roberta hold a revival for me "many" years ago. He was so sick that he couldn't even stand in the pulpit so he sat on the altar and preached...One of the best revivals I'd ever been a part of.
Praying for the entire family.

The last time I saw Bro.Elwood was at the G/A in Ft. Worth. Although not in the cogop I was in the area and dropped in. He and Sis Elva were in a shouting mood and running across the front. Memories flooded my mind(good ones).
I first remember meeting Bro. Elwood and Sis. Reberta as a teenager when he was general VLB director. He came to the church in North St. Louis. Rev. Ray Jones (another one of my hero's who shaped my life dramatically) was the pastor.
I often have wondered where the cogop would be today if Bro.Elwwod could have been at the helm during the 70's. He was a leader of that I am certain. A mentor of a whole generation of evangelist and pastors. One who will be greatly misses. Prayers go out to the family
When I think of the cogop I think of Elwood matthews, Sis. Howard , Billy Murry. Guess that just shows my age. (oh, how could I forget. Ron Hamm

Paul, these are the great ones I remember too. I have been on Youth Mission Teams with Brother & Sister Matthews in the early 70's. What a preacher! Very positive and lots of fun. He will be missed. The sad part is that it seems that these people are not being replaced. The church has lost its legendary preachers.........

Sad to hear, A great man of God. I guess if you had any dealing with the cogop you would know him.
