COGOP in Haiti

Postby Pastor Gary » January 13th, 2010, 5:57 pm

We have some 60,000 COGOP members in Haiti, and -- as of now -- have no contact and no way of knowing who/how many are safe or not.
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

I assume each pastor got the automated call from David Bryan yesterday...No word yet from the national overseer as of yesterday afternoon. Definately praying.

We are praying.

We would appreciate prayers for ALL believers in Haiti. We have over 150K Nazarenes there, as well.

In times like these, the Holy Spirit can do MIGHTY things through all of them in the midst of the situation to reach the hearts of the lost, including those who practice voodoo. Take a not, Pat R.

AND, the Holy Spirit can do MIGHTY things through all of us on the outside as the people see us contribute to support and help them.

I would encourage you to funnel your support through COGOP or another Christian ministry. I believe that allows God to receive the Glory for the generosity of the believers.

The Red Cross, and other secular orgs are wonderful. Don't get me wrong. But, aid coming from them has nothing to do with God, in the eyes of the recipients.
God Bless You

Do you know, PG, what COGOP is doing to actually deliver relief? I want to give to someone I trust, but I don't know if COGOP has set up any particular way of taking donations or delivering aid. Post that info if you get it, please.

Good point, dolfan!

For our church (Naz), we do have a very detailed and pre-set procedure for relief in a multitude of situations.

It works very well and efficiently with very little involved in admin, etc.

MOST of the donated funds go directly to relief and not in getting it to the scene.
God Bless You

I would give through Sovereign Grace Ministries. They are absolutely trustworthy. Here is a link to a post about it...

Information

Postby Martha » January 14th, 2010, 8:15 am

The following is copied from the COGOP Connections sent by Shawn.

As you may know, the Church of God of Prophecy has a significant presence in the nation of Haiti-our most recent statistic indicating 58,000 members-much of which live in the Port-au-Prince region, along with our Orphanage being located in this region, as well, caring for 68 orphaned children.

In a nation already challenged by limited infrastructure, extreme poverty, past devastating hurricanes and flooding, the 7.0 earthquake which struck yesterday has only exacerbated the difficulty that our brothers and sisters already faced on a daily basis. Due to all communication lines being down in the Port-au-Prince area, we still have NOT been able to make contact with our National Overseer. From the news reports, our fears are that there is much loss of life and property, but our faith must rise and reach up to the One who is ultimately in control. Your urgent prayer support is vital at this very moment!

Certainly, we appreciate your patience as we make every effort possible to make connections and supply you with correct information about our brothers and sisters in Haiti. As is our general rule, we will be providing E-mail updates along with website Connection updates and posts as soon as we receive them.

As with any disaster of this magnitude, your financial gifts are deeply appreciated to help assist our Church people in this grave time of need. You can contribute online through our Church website: www.cogop.org and also, through our standard procedures of the International Offices. Individuals may contribute through our Helping Hand Ministry and local churches through Harvest Partners [Level Two] Ministry. Please designate your financial contribution for this need as follows:

Haiti-Disaster Relief-2010 Earthquake

Note that all gifts are tax deductible and 100% of your gift is applied to the need you specify.

No. This Pastor didn't. This Overseer didn't, either.

Martha posted the info you sought before I saw this. Thanks, Martha.

I also trust Compassion International and Samaritan's Purse as channels for relief funds. Both are Christian organizations with impeccable track records for accountability and financial integrity, and both have extensive infrastructures in place in Haiti.

I am a huge proponent of Charity Navigator when choosing charities to donate to or through. The gentleman from Charity Navigator was just on Cavuto. Below is the list that they have put together. I have to say that I don't know which ones are religiously affiliated. Several have been working in Haiti for more than 20 years.

Partners in Health
Direct Relief Int’l
Americares
Save the Children (food, water, shelter)

If you want to check them out or any other charities you can go to charitynavigator.org

I got this from a COGOP friend on Facebook

I received this report from Bishop Wayne Pense January 14 at 8:46pm -Church of God of Prophecy (Official) : We have received a report from our orphanage in Haiti. Five of the children have died, along with two employees. Four more children remain buried under the rubble. Please continue to prayer for this nation.
People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas. Author Unknown.

Latest on CoGoP web site:

We have received information from a Haitian pastor in Key West, Florida who was able to connect by email with our orphanage administrator. We are thankful that Bishop Dorlean, our national overseer, is safe. However, this tragedy has struck the orphanage. Five of the children have died, along with two employees. Evidently, the orphanage has sustained serious damage and four of the remaining children are trapped under the rubble and it is feared that they will die, unless they are rescued. Brother Dorlean took two severely wounded children to seek medical care. The other sixty-eight children, along with Brother Mirand, the administrator, his wife and three children are all on the street with no shelter, food or clothing.

Brother Mirand also mentioned that in one district of 11 churches, nine were completely destroyed and the other two sustained serious damage.

Obviously, the scale of this catastrophe defies full comprehension. We are continuing to seek information directly from Bishop Dorlean and will pass along information as we receive it. This suffering drives us to our knees. Seek the Lord and call on his name.

Beseeching the Lord for Haiti,

David Bryan
