Idiots like Pat Robertson don't understand the movement of tectonic plates. So, I guess any natural phenomena that occur are a result of God's judgment. Read the following explanation for the earthquake.

Here's what geologists think happened:

The actual quake appears to have occurred along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault, a virtually immovable rock that runs from Montego Bay in Jamaica to the southern part of the island of Hispaniola, which Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic. That vertical fault is pushed by the Caribbean Plate, a unsettled land mass that moves about 20 millimeters east each year.

According to Paul Mann, a research scientist at the University of Texas in Austin, the plates have been pushing against the fault since a major quake in 1760. On Tuesday, the plates got the fault to move. BY ROBERT SAMUELS

But to answer your question, Full Quiver, about what the devil sounds like, here is an authentic recording of demons from hell captured when scientists drilled a hole in siberia and lowered a microphone. I warn you up front, the recording is very, very scary. Here it is.

Rus, I heard that several years ago when the dig happened. I awoke early one morning to the news report on my clock radio/alarm. I sleep hard and sometimes when I awake to things of this nature I am really bothered by it. Either way the thought of hell's reality is a bother.

Seriously.. he just repeated accepted folklore and stated the obvious.
This was one snippet of his entire spot on helping these people asap via resources and air time.

Like the Harry Reid racial comment in a BOOK about Obama. You let it slide if he's on your side, right?

Macuser, I appreciate context, I really do. But do you think that Pat was merely repeating folklore without insinuating that it was the cause of the tragedy?

I can't say that I agree with Pat Robertson on everything but he didn't actually say that Haiti made a pack "with" the devil, it was "to" the devil. Whether or not the devil "spoke back" is irrelevant, he is always ready and willing to deal with mankind because then he has his hands in our lives and can surely mess it up. (I understand Pat's comments to be based on folklore, my point still stands)

Russell, I see your comments on plate tectonics and such, are you implying that God is not involved in the movements of the earth? I am not sure if you were posting at the time but here is a nice thread on the sovereignty of God.

I can't believe that Haiti can be so heavily involved in voodoo and such and then when tragedy befalls them people think that that has nothing whatsoever to do with anything. Yea right.

Brian, it does have to do with something - plate tectonics.

Do you think that the Haitians on whom the towers fell were greater sinners?

Snopes always ruins the fun. It is based on a true story, but slightly exaggerated to say the least. We have a Norwegian schoolteacher to thank for the legend.

A serious question

Okay -- Pat Robertson aside for a minute:

Haiti and the Dominican Republic share an island. Haiti has pretty much always been poorer, more politically unstable, chaotic and generally a train wreck in comparison to their Dominican neighbors on the same piece of real estate.

To what is that attributed? I am asking, not setting up a trick answer.

A very good question.
TO those that feel Pat was way off base (which it was a bad comment) have you ever done a mission trip there? Have you talked to someone that has?
different place for sure

Here's one person's take on the difference:

The sizable differences are the culmination of political and social trends that stretch back decades, even centuries. In Haiti, chronic political instability and corruption have combined with poverty, illiteracy, and racial discrimination to pose insurmountable barriers to modernization. Dominicans have also experienced a great deal of corruption and instability, but since 1970 the country has maintained the transition of power through peaceful elections. The continuity of the Dominican government made possible a set of economic reforms in 1990 that led to a decade of steady growth.
