Considering I ALWAYS order my Big Macs and McDoubles with NO cheese, without a discount I might add, I think this guy should be let off the hook.

Are you lactose intolerant? I can't imagine having cheese taken off a burger!

It seems the court dropped the ball. McDonalds fired a thief. While McDonalds could have shown mercy, it seems they chose to set an example which is well within their rights. Does anyone imagine that this was the only time this employee has stolen from them? The article appears to be on board with a disturbing trend of tolerating theft as long as the victim appears to be prosperous. Theft is theft, period.

Here's another recent example of this type of distorted thinking.
My advice as a Christian priest is to shoplift. … I would ask that they do not steal from small family businesses, but from large national businesses — knowing that the costs are ultimately passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices. … My advice does not contradict the Bible's eighth commandment because God's love for the poor and despised outweighs the property rights of the rich.

A priest advocating shoplifting from large stores, very sad. :(

Warped thinking

Postby Pastor Gary » January 28th, 2010, 6:02 pm

The article states...

"The worker was fired at a McDonald's branch in the northern town of Lemmer in March last year for giving a colleague on a break a more expensive cheese burger instead of the hamburger she had paid for.

McDonald's claimed she had broken the rules, which prohibit any free gifts to family, friends or colleagues.

The decision came days after the fast-food chain reported an increase in net profits by almost 25 per cent in the last quarter of 2009."

First of all, I tend toward mercy and would probably have given a reprimand/warning for a first offense, BUT, this is a HUGE problem in the fast food industry. A young man at my church was fired from a long-time job at a food court food place after his mom approached with her empty soda cup (from another restaurant in the food court) and he refilled it for her.

Yes, it seems minor... only pennies worth of soda at cost, but he knew it was wrong, did it anyway, and he was immediately dismissed for dishonesty.

Second point - the profitability or lack thereof of McDonald's has zero to do with the employee's actions.
"God is excited to show you mercy. He rises to give you His compassion." (Isaiah 30:18)

"For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;
you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

The same logic tends to make me think I am being robbed everytime I order one of their burgers. Seems like mine ought to be 40-50 cents cheaper than the average Joe.

This is petty and I GUARANTEE this person is not the only person that does this at that McDonald's locale or at any other McDonald's franchise or corporate store. I'd bet the management had a beef, , with this particular employee and used this "infraction" as a cause to fire him.

By the way, it seems that he was under contract. Did you catch that?

Like Gary said, mercy could have been shown but McDonald's is not required by law to show mercy. I am a believer in showing mercy but I am also a believer that people who steal little things without getting caught or punished keep stealing bigger and bigger items.

Well, it's not Burger King. McDonalds never promised you could "have it your way." :) (Yes, I know I'm showing my age)

In that case, she should have been charged with breech of contract in addition to being fired.

By ordering an off-menu item at McD's you require extra manpower and slow down the production, thereby costing them MORE than the cost of a slice of cheese in labor, hence no discount.

We released an employee for underringing for family, among other things she was doing. This is no different. How much money McDonald's makes or not is entirely outside of the issue. How much money McDonald's pays for its inventory, labor or any other costs has nothing to do with underringing. Underringing is theft, plain and simple. Retail prices are set by sellers for a reason.

Just because others may do it, does not make it right for me. Neither is it right for the fired employee, under contract or not. If she had been in the good ol US of A, she probably would have been rewarded even more.

Most McDonald's make their burgers to order so this is not an issue but rather a time/labor saver to not add cheese.

It seems that it's ok to lie but not ok to add a piece of cheese around here.

Please tell me you didn't just call me a liar for disagreeing with you.
