CBS News report on how your personal info is stored on copy machine hard drives, and how the machines are re-sold as used with your info still on them, leading to identity theft and breach of privacy.

yup, old news for me. at the place I work, multi-function devices arent' allowed, especially with hard drives. and the copiers with Hard drives are either encrypted or not allowed to be used. :)

Question? Are you sure the copiers & faxes at Kinkos, Fedexes, smaller businesses like insurance companies, financial advisors, local chiropractor, dentist, post office etc. are equally secured? Do you think this applies to them? My fax machine at work keeps up to 200 pages in memory...my copier keeps 500-10000 on hand. We copy every important paper in our office. Our fax just died and we almost sent it out...but will now retrieve the computer chip in it and run it over a strong magnet. Will that work? Your job's may be secure...but is your local dentist's secure?

I wouldn't trust a magnet to do the job, I tried that with a VERY strong magnet a few years ago trying to damage some old floppy disks (we were wanting to do some training on disk repair) and it had very little to no effect on them. and that was cheap floppies, Hard drives would be even more resistant.
