I was looking around to see if anyone was tired of their wifi only 16g iPads and had them for sale. I noticed that the price at Apple .com is about a hundred bucks less than any of the placed I happen to run across at other online places. weird. shouldn't the "retail" price at the manufacturer be the "high" price to compare to? what's wrong with this picture (rhetorical).

I have no response because I would NEVER buy a recently released product off eBay, Craigslist, etc. I would assume it was broken or defective.
I buy Apple products, but I buy them at an Apple store. They have staff who actually know and use the products and can answer questions.

That was meant as a generalization, but I get what you're saying. Is there no Apple store near you anywhere in which you can walk in, play with the product and walk out with it in hand?

that's not how it works. when one wants to buy a computer, they never go to the manufacturer, they only sell at "retail" pricing. you always go to a reputable other store that is authorized to sell. that's how it works for all other kinds of computers. they sell much less than the manufacturer.

Apple is not like that. Did you know that none of the employees at the Apple Store work on commission? They also don't get "spiffs" for up-selling add-ons and upgrades? They are all just paid salary for their time.
You won't see a lot of secondary market sources selling discounted Apple products. Best Buy, Costco and others seem to sell iPods for the same price as Apple.

My experience has been that Apple prices are the same no matter where you buy! Which is one reason I love it!! I haven't seen higher prices except individuals selling them secondarily. As far as the Apple store, they are my second stop. I use my original Apple reseller here in Huntsville. He has been an authorized reseller for more than 25 years. They provide me excellent service and anything I need. If I can't find it there I go to the Apple store in town, which is fairly new. Anyway, that's my experience, which doesn't seem like your experience. But then again like I said, I don't shop for Apple online, except at the Apple online store. Your Best Buy experience hasn't been mine, our Best Buy as the exact same prices as Apple and Mac Resource.

Dawgs would love this..
I typically go and buy online and thus skip all the taxes. Now that equals real savings
