Do you think this would work?

Well, it's a better idea than standing around hoping the oil magically stops, which seems the current strategy.

I guess I am wondering if generating that much heat at that depth would work, since they have spoken of ice crystals, and, if so, would it ignite the oil?

The first problem that must be overcome is cutting the pipe the forms the bore of the well. This is the reason they have not been able to cap the well in the first place. The device that is supposed to do that job has a malfunction and cannot generate enough hydraulic pressure to shear the pipe so a cap can be installed. Just something to think about.

Mole,
I've thought of this very same concept as I'm sure countless others have.
The point is actually doing something as PG states.

The other day I heard BILL CLINTON espousing methods and even the nuclear option to get the blasted thing stopped. It was shocking/refreshing and it made even me rally behind him... to actually hear from an adult leader even if I didn't agree with him 100% to get this blasted problem solved ASAP.

This is an unnecessary crisis but very key in exposing Govt limitations especially when lead by an individual driven by idealistic ideology over helping real people. This has been absolutely the worse handled event in modern history by any sitting US President.

It's interesting how helpless the situation appears to be. A verse that came to my mind yesterday: Luke 21:25-26
