What is this infatuation with Islam?

I am continuously stymied by what appears to me to be an infatuation by the political left in this country with Islam.
The new NASA mission. CNN's Mideast Editor expressing "sadness" for the death of a terrorist Hezbollah ayatollah as a "giant" whom she "respect[ed] a lot". Prince Charles -- no American, I know, but admired by the left for his environmental politics -- expressing that the world should follow the way of Islam. Carly Fiorina, the Republican nominee for California's US Senate seat held by Barbara Boxer, explicitly stated in September, 2001 that Islamic society was the best in world history until the 17th century; in 2003, she stated, "may the wisdom of the Prophet Muhammad inspire us" and further, "The Islamic example has helped create a world where democracy and transparency and rule of law are empowering people and taking them to new heights." Sarah Palin endorsed her.
Other examples: Some suggestion that President Obama is a clandestine Muslim. The disinvitation of Franklin Graham from the Pentagon prayer event because he rightly and roundly described Islam as a violent and hateful religion that was anti-Christian. Even the National Association of Evangelicals are in on the action, pledging to praise the virtues of Islam one week per year in 2008.
This is the bloodiest force on the planet today, Islam, and it stands antithetically to every left-wing social values of "tolerance" and whatever-goes-sexually. So, why the love? Am I just imagining things, here?
