What I Learned When The Power Went Off

Postby dolfan » June 15th, 2011, 5:47 am

So. I'm working at my desk this morning and at about 9:15 the power dies. Everywhere as far as the eye could see. I kept an appointment under a skylight in the building's common area. Still no juice, so I hopped into my car and explored to see what I could about the extent of the outage. I found the limits of it, and was near Starbucks at a red light that works.

In front of me was a white mid 90s Buick with a painted sheet of plywood secured to 2 2x4s which were resting on the edges of the roofline and strapped on. It was a stage. A cartop stage. Lights aimed at it were mounted on a rear spoiler. The windshield was smashed, but not so I couldn't make out a large fake crown lying on the dash. Then I saw the magnetic sign on the door. Michael Jackson Impersonator For Hire.

I have seen this local incarnation of the gloved one sampling his services in full Jocko dress in parking lots around town, on the ground. But now he has added a stage to his car roof. And spoiler lights for.....effect.

I thought, "That guy is sold out." He has his eggs in the basket of imitating the dead King of Pop, add I am ashamed for MYSELF because I am not that sold on imitating the resurrected King of Kings.

I envy Faux Michael. The children of the world of THIS generation are wiser than the children of light. I dont want to be faux Jesus-follower.

How much am I willing to yield and forsake myself to appear foolish for His name's sake?
Human government bears the same relation to hell as the church bears to heaven. (David Lipscomb, On Civil Government, 72).
