How many of you actually use the QR codes becoming more and more common in ads and in publications?

I like them but never use them. My android phone does not evidently like the free qr reader apps in the market, and having one is not important enough to spend even $1 on one.

I seen one the other day in Charisma....indicating a info on Islam's growth. Can't say that I have noticed them regularly. You scan them with your smart phone, right?
Correct

Correct - use a phone app to capture the code and it will say "Do you want to open the website...?" Usually more in-depth info, a coupon for a discount or something.
I capture codes on point-of-sale displays in stores and sometimes receive product discounts at check-out.

Yes, it is supposed to be a simple scan click that will shoot you to a url or give you a secret message etc etc. Seen last one at Applebees the other day while enjoying some great comfort food. It was on my desert table display.
It guess it works better ( actually functional ) that seeing a Facebook icon on everything. I mean that is really crazy. Buy a huge ad in a National magazine and advertise Facebook.. zowie. It reminds me of the old AOL days. Everything was AOL then. Now it's Facebook.
Btw.. my iphone, ipad will make them for free and encode whatever message I want and export as eps, jpg etc. I should start using them more, I guess.
They are just graphically hideous.

I played around with a QR code maker once, a free online one. Made one for the store deli or something. Put it on Facebook. Crickets..... . Haven't fooled with it. Of course, where we are, people are still using rotary dial phones with party lines.

Well, it's almost that bad.
Graphically

I actually find them
less visually offensive than bar codes.

Or perhaps the new fad will be to just encode a Facebook page URI into a QR code.

Well.... The bar code has been relegated to the back of the products packaging. The underside.. the corners... the ingredients areas etc. It has to be searched for typically to locate it.
These hideous things take front and center when you use them correctly. YIKES.

I haven't really discovered the big deal about them. Maybe I don't understand the purpose fully.

Couldnt agree more. I finally got on board with an iPhone and still dont have an app to read them or even have a real desire to learn more. Guess I'm in the dark ages.

It's a tool like anything else.
I preparing some literature for a Vegas Tradeshow with promotional material and I am including one. It allows you to see the "gist" on the slick.. but scan the code and it will download a detailed PDF about the expanded process.

We were at a Chamber of Commerce gala two weeks ago and one of the Mayors had a QR code on his business card. Someone at our table didn't know what it was so I pulled out my iPhone and showed them what it did when I scanned it, it went straight to that Mayors city website. The gentleman I was showing, showed his wife who runs a non-profit woman's organization, and she wants to add it to her business card.
I love the idea of them on business cards, especially if you can save the contact info on your phone.
