Well, I voted even though I am not a pastor. I am a pastor's wife though and I do tithe.

We tithe on gross. I don't want Uncle Sam to get his before the Lord does. :D

I dont know how it is for other preachers and their families, but coming from one family that had to scrimp and save on the meager income the church gave them, it was almost ludicrous to expect them to give back 10% of squat.

In louisville at the GA.....I must not be much if you cant remember a mug like mine

Whaaa??? I only attended the Jude2 "late-night" dinner at Jerry's... grant it some people wandered in late that I MAY have missed but I surely don't remember you... this is driving me nuts! I'm gonna have to go look through the pictures my husband took.

Are you sure it was me?? Where you at Jerry's? Did we say anything to eachother???

I hate this... #-o I try to go see the Passion of Christ and there's this woman like 6 people down, hollerin' "Tray-vera!... Tray-vera!" and we went through the MOST embarrassing ordeal of me trying to remember who she was... she claims we worked together (for one day) and I trained on her something!!! She surely remembered me but I NEVER could place her even after she told me her name!!! It was absolutely horrible.. BUT, I've been at my workplace since 96 and I guess I could've forgot... but I'd hate to think I'm THAT addled already!!!!

Sometimes I take expenses, only ministry related though. Most of the time I pay off the gross. I don't however pay on the rental value of my parsonage. Years ago at BTI, Leonard Kendrick said that we should but I never got the vision for that.

That's why I can't remember you!! I've never met you!! I didn't attend that Mexican lunch because I was at home sleeping (that week was my vacation and I was catching up!) FYI: Gerald was there... but we're not connected at the hip like siamese twins... (at least until we had that radical new surgery!!!) :D

Arguments both ways

I know there are arguments both ways, but the way our accountant explained it was "If you had a dental practice as a sole practioner, would you pay on the gross? Before office rent and salaries? Before all the X-ray film and nitrous-oxide was bought? No, you'd pay on what you got after all the overhead was paid. Ministry expenses are different, but the same principle applies... Gas to visit hospitals (even the total expense of a vehicle used only for ministry) study books, cell phones, etc. are the "tools of the trade" without which you can almost not minister at all. They are NOT part of your income, they are a cost of doing business."

She specializes in churches and ministry accounting.

I stand to be corrected, but I am almost positive I read that Rick Warren tithes 90% and lives off of 10% due to the huge amount of tithes involved, etc... If this is true, I truly respect his integrity.

Yes, I was there and sat across from J Davis and Pastor Gary. Lil Sis was not.

I just looked at the photos of all that was in the group.

You lurked at the Mexican Restaurant, didnt you!?

When I pastored, I felt lead to pay on the gross of all my earnings, not just those in the ministry. (I was bi-vocational out of necessity)

I discussed this with a fellow pastor and was told me I was nuts. He outlined some of the same thing PG's accountant said and basicly told me overpaying was "ridiculous."

I let him convince me to the point I did as he said and not as I was lead (young and mush-headed as I was). I now regret not doing as I was lead and it makes me wonder what woulda, coulda, shoulda been.

After leaving the pastorate and going into a truer teaching ministry at the Winston church, I taught a lesson series on stewardship (btw money was only one part of one lesson out of a series of 5 total lessons)

During those lessons, both my wife and myself were convicted separately and when we compared notes, we both knew what we should do. It has been tough at times, but we went back to paying on the gross and actually have increased it at times when we have been increased for special things, bonuses, etc. We even tithe out tax refund even though technically it has already been paid on once.

In my mind, if I owned a business, I would do the same. God has blessed and allowed me to have what I have. If He decides to remove it (and on occasion He has), He is STILL God. (Thank you for a valuable lesson, Job) To me, if He is God, why should I not give him of the First that I have instead of the leftovers.

I am not saying everyone should do as my family, on the contrary, I am saying follow God's lead and do what HE tells you, not the latest stewardship teacher.
