Cheating in Sports?

Postby Paully_44 » July 26th, 2007, 4:25 am

Barry Bonds isnt the only who has been accused of "cheating". For some reason, most think he is the worst.

here is an interesting read by Sports Illustrated on the subject as well as other reads on cheating in each sport.
Let the wild rumpus start!

Paully 44 - The reason I have such a difficult time with Barry and Baseball for that matter is simply this. Look back to the era when Hank Aaron broke Babe's record. In most ball parks it's was 330 down the lines, 385 in the alley's and 410 to 440 to centerfield. Balls where not juiced or live like they are now. Most parks today have 310 down the lines, 375 or shortly in the alley's and 400 straight away.

Plus look at Bonds when he came up with the Pirates. Great hitter, he could hit for power, but was thin and lean. Now look at him.

All this while baseball turned a blind eye to the fact that players where using performance enhancing drugs.

I'm not blind to the fact that it has happened in football, or basketball. But for me baseball was (in most folks mind it still is) America's past-time. The home run record is a sacred record that is about to be broken by a man, who in my opinion would have never broke it had he not cheated.

With that thought in mind, I don't believe Walter Peyton was on anything when he broke Jim Brown's record. Nor was Emmitt Smith or Barry Sanders. Brett Farve is not tested to be on any thing and he is about to break Dan Marino's TD record.

Kareem was not on anything we he broke the scoring record in NBA. Nor was Micheal.

There is cheating every year it seems in the Tour de France, but who cares about guys riding bikes over a country? I don't.

Tiger Woods, while I'm not a big fan of his he will no doubt break Jack's record of Major Championships in golf, but Tiger doesn't look a lot different than he did nearly 10 years ago when he broke into the PGA.

So Paully, in my opinion there is a world of difference between Baseball, Barry and the rest of the sports world. It's also one of the major reasons that I have quit being a baseball fan. Until Mr. Selig steps up and says but an * by Barry Bonds name in the record book it is still Hank Aaron's record in my opinion. One more point, I am not a Pete Rose fan, and Pete has finally admitted he gambled on baseball, but because he did, he has been banned for life. Barry has used performance enhancing drugs and one day will be in the hall of shame (fame for baseball fans), and yet one of the greatest players of all times is not in.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but that is my .$25 worth.

Never really a fan of baseball, I loved playing as a kid but I have NEVER really liked watching on TV.

Baseball to me has changed over the years. Like Most PRO sports (and too many colleges as well) It is all about the Player, not the team or even the game. It is all about what that player can get, in the way of money, records and personal PR. I guess I am getting jaded in my old age. THere used to be a time a Player wanted to be on a good team and that player stayed there most of their careers... NOW you are not sure who is on what team from week to week.

It is no longer for the LOVE of the game and because of that those involved are not worried about anything but themselves, so they could not care less about harming the game as long as they get paid.
