Pastor Ables -- Bama v Ole Miss

Postby dolfan » October 12th, 2008, 1:00 pm

PA, early line is Bama by 15 over Ole Miss next week. I wouldn't give any more than 8. What do you think?

The Bama - Ole Miss affair has been close and hard fought for the past three seasons, mostly coming down to the last minutes.

I have felt like we (Ole Miss) could beat each team we have played this year, although Florida worried me. In hindsight, we have mostly beaten ourselves and the win over Florida was a complete game of mostly error free football. Ole Miss could easily be undefeated at this point.

Though I see Alabama as a very good team this year, I don't see them as any better than Florida (whew, poor LSU). I believe we match up relatively well with the Tide and if we can play the intense, error free football brand played in the Swamp... we have a sporting good chance at another upset.

College football is unpredictable though, and Bama could win by 40. Our best shot at winning will be to score early and often. In a defensive game, edge goes to Alabama.

There is a fairly good article concerning the game at http://bleacherreport.com/articles/6543 ... sults#poll

I've been worried about the Ole Miss game for a while. I watched them play Wake. They're better than their record. Bama may be looking ahead to UT, too. I hope, hope, hope that our guys give the Rebs the respect they deserve and prepare accordingly. If so, I think we win a pretty close game. If not, we may join Vandy in the now-defeated column.

As for comparing Bama to Florida, I can't disagree that we're no better. Heck, I'm just glad the comparison is getting made this season! But, one game at a time, and one very good opponent at a time. Our team will need to play it's A game, I think.

It looks as if I just almost had it called. :) Alabama is a very good team, but guess what? Ole Miss has to be the best "3 win 4 loss" team in the land. :D

We dominated the second half. Alabama is not a very good second half team and Ole Miss gets stronger near the end of games. That combination almost spelled disaster for the Tide in Tuscaloosa.

Perfect analysis in so brief a remark! Ole Miss is good, I don't care what their record is. I've watched them in 3 games this year, more than I've watched any other team than Bama and Auburn. I KNEW this was going to be a tough game. I didn't know we'd get a 21 point lead and pretty much blow it, but that's as much as testimony to Ole Miss not giving up, fighting and playing well as it is a testimony to Bama's rather, um, lacking performances in the 2nd half of games. I'm not gonna diminish Ole Miss's game by saying we played poorly. Yeah, we played poorly, but we played poorly against a team that happens to play really good when they're behind. We were lucky to win. I'm looking forward to seeing Ole Miss beat Auburn.

Looking at their schedule, I think they've got maybe one more loss (LSU, and I include Bama as a very possible victim in that matchup). I know 7-5 is not where Rebel fans would like to finish, and who knows, they may win out to 8-4. Either way, I think it's a success story for what Nutt had to overcome in Orgeron's mess. He's taken a team that has talent but not a lot of depth and will have a bowling team at the end of the season. Next year, everybody in the SEC West needs to underline Ole Miss week and make sure they're ready. They could win the whole thing next year.

I hope you're right.

One final thought about Saturday's game. The thing that gripes me the most is that we shorted ourselves a weapon due to incompetence. Greg Hardy, our most effective pass rusher and dominant tackler in last year's match-up, was relegated to limited action due to his special shoes (foot injury) being left in Oxford. Ironically, Alabama beat us with the pass.
