Iowa pastors who support Republican Mike Huckabee for president have received letters warning them that getting involved in politics could endanger the tax-exempt status of their churches.
Several pastors who have publicly backed Huckabee, a Southern Baptist minister who has support from many evangelicals, said they have received the letters, which have no return address. They have arrived in the weeks leading to Thursday's precinct caucuses.

No DeWayne but it is something that all pastors and minister's should be careful of. I remember being in a so called revival service a few years back and the Gen HQ rep that was "preaching" could not stay off the subject of politics and even implied that you would lose your salvation if you voted for Gore. This stuff needs to stay out of the pulpits. He had an opportunity to preach the Gospel and it could have been the only time or last time that some had to hear it but instead he preached politics. It could have cost the local church their tax exempt status as well.

Who??

Postby Pastor Gary » January 3rd, 2008, 3:05 pm

Who are these pastors who are stupid enough to open and read unsigned letters with no return address??

I have a very good shredder in my office in which I regularly "file" unsigned correspondence lacking a return address. (Along with letters from Benny Hinn's team, and others...)

you surround them with your favor as with a shield." (Psalm 5:12)

FQ, a church is automaticlly exempt by its very nature. A church does not need to have a 501 C3 to be exempt, as long as it is doing the work of a church.

The fear tatics are a means to intimidate churches from voicing their view concerning candidates and issues.
You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting
and preserving yourself.

I think it's a non-issue - I have never heard a pastor endorse a candidate from the pulpit.

  Used to work with a lady at COGOP General Headquarters who once told me to file something in "CM." I asked what "CM" was, and she said, "Commode Material."

These are just threats, BUT some ministries have been investigated along these lines in the last election, and more formal attacks to take away their status were made. With no return address, I'd disregard it, BUT at the same time, it's also important to remember the purpose of the church is to promote CHRIST, not a political candidate.

Not so Paul, not all "churches" are tax exempt. Some are for profit organizations and are taxable. TN for one is different than other states. I have been involved in these processes, the paperwork, and the hoopla in bot TN and NC and the process is different and so are the laws. In TN I didn't need a 501 c 3. I did have to be careful though how I conducted business, etc.
