Tech: Steve Jobs Calls FLASH floppy disk of web

Postby MacUser » April 29th, 2010, 9:51 am

Apple's Thoughts on Flash:
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

Steve sees Flash as the floppy drive of the web. It's no longer needed to watch video. There are plenty of other (and better) games in the App Store. HTML5 is open and doesn't rely on Adobe. Steve ends his letter with this final message to Adobe: "New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind."

Ouch for Adobe...

maybe Apple should concentrate on allowing open interface to their devices. itunes inhales with great force. can't complain about the speck in the eye, when they have a great big beam sticking out of theirs.
Thanks, Brent "RamboPreacher" Hoefling

Did you read the thoughts above?

First, there’s “Open”.

Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system.

Apple has many proprietary products too. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards. Apple’s mobile devices all ship with high performance, low power implementations of these open standards.

For HTML5 video to work in browser scripting it would have to be able to be updated or it would encounter errors reading and decoding. If it works it would be great, but I feel it will see alot of problems with compatiblity.

Flash Pros
Flash player allows for uniformity throughout all browsers
More effects than HTML5 and JavaScript
Vector based for easy scaling

Flash Cons
External plugin has to be downloaded to view Flash
Search engines don't read Flash well
SWFs can be large and take while to download

HTML5 Pros
Very fast (with CSS)
Canvas and Video
GeoLocation API

HTML5 Cons
Not fully supported on all browsers
Limited animations/effects
Slower animations than Flash

As I have read the way that HTML5 video would decode faster is that it would use "In addition to software decoders, a hardware video decoder should exist for the format, as many embedded processors do not have the performance to decode video."

In cases where decoders are not built into the browser, the format support will be dictated by the multimedia framework of the operating system. Quick time.  Now that's an floppy!

 Hey I'm just as sad to see Adobe Flash go too. It's now dead and doesn't even know it yet.

I think the article addresses most of your pros/cons as Steve views them. Remember this guy just invents new ways of doing things instead staying with the status quo. It's what he does.

Some how I don't see Adobe Flash as the floppy, They are Pros at what they do. The reason this comes up is because of the Apple iphone and ipad. Steve would like not to use Flash and to create his own, but in doing that it would have to be compatibity with other browsers.

Steve is hoping that the HTML web creaters give support to Apple.

HTML5 video is intended by its creators to become the new standard way to show video online, but has been hampered by lack of agreement as to which video formats should be supported in the video tag.

The formats will in turn have some patents and or per-distributor licensing. So would it come down to Open Source?

So who will be the winner,? Apple, Mircosoft, or Google.... For real the HTML developers (WHATWG) have being coding this from June 2004 and will not be finished until 2022. Trying to do what Adobe Flash has being doing for years. Reinventing the Wheel

I see in the future for HTML5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 ...........................................................

Microsoft embracing HTML5 / H.264 for IE 9
http://www.tuaw.com/2010/05/03/microsof ... -for-ie-9/

Apparently it is about security issues, performance and sticking with a standard after all? Steve is just as always.. ahead of the curve.

Dean Hachamovitch, general manager for Internet Explorer, stated last week in a blog posting that the "future of the web is HTML5." He noted that the HTML5 specification does not specify a particular format, and that "H.264 is an excellent format." The bottom line? "In its HTML5 support, IE9 will support playback of H.264 video only."

...Although Micro$oft and Adobe are working together on Flash, there are issues with security, performance, and reliability with Adobe's player.

It appears that Micro$oft is planning for a future that is less dominated by Adobe Flash, and one that is more in line with the standards-based approach that Jobs and Apple are embracing.
