We've done the same thing, when the kids ask, we don't lie, but we do share the tradition of Saint Nicholas, and explain it as a tradition we play.
My son asked a few years ago, and we told him, now he likes to help a little here and there with things especially for his little brother. We did make it a point to stress that it isn't his place to tell other children, that's for their parents to handle.

I think it also depends on how much Santa is stressed in Christmas, we generally get them each a gift or two from Santa, but most of what they get is from us, and they know it's from us. Santa plays a part, but not the most important part.
