Is Blasphemy Offensive?

Postby justsam » July 19th, 2007, 6:07 pm

From Dictionary.com
1. impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things.
2. Judaism.
a. an act of cursing or reviling God.
b. pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton (YHVH) in the original, now forbidden manner instead of using a substitute pronunciation such as Adonai.
3. Theology. the crime of assuming to oneself the rights or qualities of God.
4. irreverent behavior toward anything held sacred, priceless, etc.: He uttered blasphemies against life itself.

Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

One interesting thing about blasphemy: of all the ten commandments, this is the only one that God specifically promises that He will not hold guiltless those who commit it.

Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? (Jesus)

I voted "Depends Upon Context." This is based upon the necessity of an actor portraying of some historic and or literary figures in a truthful, accurate, and believable manner. To illustrate my point, George C. Scott in Patton. Had Scott not used Patton's words that are a matter of public record, his portrayal would not have been true to the historical facts.

I find it offensive and unfortunately it is becoming more and more acceptable on television networks (especially cable).

Desensitization happens when we ignore feelings of conviction and then the things that used to don't bother us any longer. I'm sure I'm not perfect or anywhere close to it in this regard! :( I'm just trying to do better. :)
..I press on to take hold of that
for which Christ took hold of me.

I would still consider it offensive, BUT I would be offended at the character not neccesarily the actor portraying him.

With fictional characters even, it's not realistic always to avoid foul language, but I think that is different than someone using it in normal conversation.
"Why would God allow Hitler his chapter in history? Why would God send a whale to swallow Jonah or turn a woman into a pillar of salt? Surely there were other ways. But I'll leave the particular methods of God to God."
