(yea, and Obama won that other side, but wasn't paying much attention there.)
Maybe my phone will stop ringing now! we have been getting about 6 political calls every day for the last month or so! arghghgg. when the democrat candidate reps call asking about voting and caucusing, I tell them that based on current democratic choices, I would rather write in R.M.Nixon, then hang up. :)

not so fast

It appears that the first two states, Iowa and NH, usually vote for their neighbors. The winners of Iowa usually don't win a thing actually.

GREAT! That means the odds are in our favor! If only a small percentage of non-incumbants who win Iowa go on to be President, and we have a slew who have NOT went on, then we are DUE!!!!!

GO MIKE, GO!

So a win is not a win? I'll bet a loss would be a loss, though, huh?

of course the "liberal media" around here have headlines like "Obama wins", and then in the article lost at the bottom talks about the GOP, and Huck.

Other than an incumbent, has anyone who won the IOWA primary since it's inception gone on to win the presidency?

I got the results for the Iowa caucuses off of wikipedia. Excluding incumbents, the only candidates who won Iowa who actually became president were Jimmy Carter in 1976 and George W. Bush in 2000. Actually the Carter thing is questionable too, because although Carter beat all the other candidates, "Uncommitted" beat him by 9 percentage points.

For those curious, here are the Iowa winners for the last 30 years:

GOP:
2004: Bush (incumbent)
2000: Bush
1996:Bob Dole (won nomination, lost general election)
1992: George H.W. Bush (incumbent, won nomination, but not elected president)
1988: Bob Dole (did not win nomination)
1984: Reagan (incumbent)
1980: George H.W. Bush (did not win nomination)
1976: Gerald Ford (incumbent, lost general election)

Democrat:
2004: John Kerry (won nomination, lost general election)
2000: Al Gore (won nomination, lost general election)
1996: Clinton (incumbent)
1992: Tom Harkin (did not win nomination)
1988: Dick Gephardt (did not win nomination)
1984: Walter Mondale (won nomination, lost general election)
1980: Jimmy Carter (incumbent, lost general election)
1976: Carter
1972: Edmund Muskie (did not win nomination)
