Kiffen to TN?

Postby pastorables » November 26th, 2008, 12:21 pm

All reports seem to have Lane Kiffen as the frontrunner for the TN coach vacancy now. That would be a huge gamble for the TN administration? Kiffen is only 10 months older than Peyton Manning.

All reports two days ago had Texas Tech's coach with a confirmed meeting with the AD.

Three days ago all reports had Cincinatti's coach...with reported meetings and confirmed sources.

They have officially stated they have 5 candidates on their list and will pursue like crazy with hopefully an announcement by SEC Championship weekend. I doubt right now they have a clearcut front runner.

To me...kiffin (Sp?) is a mistake.

UT needs to walk wisely in this hire. I can see why fans are skeptical about Kiffin. I think he'd be a really good x's and o's guy. But, like Pat Dye says, "It aint' about X's and O's. It's about Jimmys and Joes." Can he make that kind of connection in Tennessee? Will he blow it in recruiting? Is he just too foreign? I don't think so, but plenty of UT fans seem to. You folks are better judging who'll fit there than I am.

Saban talked to him about being OC at Bama before hiring Major Applewhite. Kiffin was Raider-bound, then. Of course, that's a no-brainer for most guys looking to move up. If he winds up at UT, and the fragrance of a hire is in the air on that, I'd figure he'll do well. I could be wrong, though. I still think Butch Davis would've been the real "get".

Lane can recruit NATIONALLY and UT needs that right now.
Currently UT has to compete against Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and even Vandy when recruiting. There are several others of course but due to either the winning ways of the above mentioned schools or their coaches recruiting in the south is tough.
Lane can look elsewhere for quality talent and may even steal some away from the likes of USC.

espn is reporting it is a done deal, at 2m a year.

It would be cool for him to show up at UT wearing orange pulling for the Vols tomorrow. but that might take away from Phil.

Good luck to UT football and Lane Kiffin. May he succeed!

I am hearing reports that Kiffen may bring Ed Orgeron on staff. Coach O is a superb recruiter! That would help Kiffen immensely. They were on staff together at USC.
