New Program added to our Curriculum

Postby paul » February 11th, 2010, 11:37 am

Working to meet the needs of the Whole Man, Body, Soul and Spirit.

World Mission Outreach Fellowship is very excited about the addition of a new trimester that is being added to the curriculum of our Bible Colleges around the world. Nancy and I thank you for your prayers, support and encouragement.

Nation to Nation and ISOM has completed the filming of BOKS ( Bringing Opportunities to other through Knowledge and Service) a Humanitarian Trimester. Here is a brief outline of it purpose and outline of its content.

One of the challenges of missions in the developing world is being confronted by overwhelming poverty and unmet human needs. Another challenge is finding a way to help national brothers and sisters meet these needs that goes beyond a minimally effective handout. WIN Ministry has been working with doctors, dentist, agriculturalists, and humanitarian workers, to film very specific and simple “technologies” being used around the world to move people from poverty, sickness, and malnutrition to a reasonable life-style which they can maintain on their own.

Background: Around the developing world millions are suffering from malnutrition. Much of this malnutrition is caused by people destroying their farmland and then having poor soil. The most common pattern is:

1. As cities grow they use all the surrounding forest for wood and charcoal
2. The disappearance of the forest leads to dwindling rains
3. Without tree cover the sun destroys nutrients in the soil
4. Without tree cover the rains, when they come, wash away the top soil making the land infertile
5. The other significant challenge is that many countries have to depend on the rainfall as they have no system of irrigation. Since the rainy season may only last four or five months, farming is limited to those months, and people often starve the rest of the year.
6. Our last difficulty is that many of the world’s poor live in big cities where no land is available for gardening and vegetables and fruits are expensive.

Many of the technologies filmed deal with solutions to the problems mentioned above. It needs to be noted that these technologies have been gathered from around the world, from places where they have already been used successfully. Also, it is better to have numerous technologies because most of them there is no “one size fits all.” What works in Africa may not work in Asia. Following are the topics that are covered in this module.

1. ROOF TOP OR URBAN GARDENING: with Dr. Tim Motis. This course teaches how to grow vegetables on a flat cement roof or an angled tin roof, and to do so very inexpensively ( often using items people throw away). It also teaches how to create a garden on different levels of wooden frames, growing plants in old tires.

2. MORINGA TREE” with Beth Doerr. This course is about a special tree which grows easily in hot, dry climates around the world. The leaves are highly nutritious and six tablespoons of crushed, dried leaves added to a meal once a day can take a person from malnutrition to good nutrition. Whole communities can be impacted by planting these trees in the gardens. The seeds also can be used as a food source, as well as added to water to purify the water.

3. WATER PURIFICATION: with Beth Doerr. This course teaches how to make a water purification system using simple, inexpensive materials including: two sizes of pebbles, sand, and a plastic bucket-like container, and a piece of pipe. It also includes using the Moringa Tree Seeds to purify water and includes using a simple solar solution to purifying water ( putting the water in a clear jar on a tim roof for six hours.

4. SMOKE-LESS COOKING STOVES: With Beth Doerr. Poor people in developing countries around the world cook over open wood or charcoal fires, often in their homes. The inhalation of the fumes in the homes is equivalent to smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day, for each of the family members. Approximately 1.6 million people die each year from indoor pollution. The Smoke-less stove can be built with local materials—nine bricks or a bit of motor for almost no cost. It uses either wood or charcoal, is much more fuel efficient and because of its high chimney burns the gases and smokes released by the fire, and thereby saves people from inhaling the smoke.

5. ALTERNATIVE FUELS: With Beth Doerr. This session will introduce a simple technique for taking waste and converting it into fuel briquettes. Ordinary paper waste, corn husks, rice hulls, vegetable refuse, etc.. can be compressed in a special way and then used like firewood.

6. COMPOSTING: With Larry Yarger. This is on how to do simple composting to restore productive top soil to your land. It includes a practical, visual, step by step explanation on two different ways to improve productivity through composting.

7. SEED SAVING TECHNOLOGIES: With Dr. Tim Motis. This is a very technical course which would be useful to larger scale, better educated farmers, or to humanitarian workers teaching farming.

8. BASIS DENTAL HYHEIN: with Dr. Brent Wong. These two sessions are for a general audience. They include information on the importance of nutrition, avoiding sugars, and how to brush and floss. It also includes information on how to make a toothbrush, toothpaste, and dental floss, using materials available in village or locations around the world.

9. TAKING CARE OF SICK PERSONS AT HOME: With Dr. Dan Fountain. These courses are meant to be in the “Where there is no Doctor” course. In developing world. People use hospitals only as a last resort. Sick family members are almost always cared for at home. However, often families don’t know very basic information about home care. This course teaches principles of: cleanliness; avoidance of transmitting sickness to others; keeping a patient comfortable and in good spirits; avoiding bed sores; and other common ailments. Also a course on giving birth.
You cannot effectively love and minister to others when you are obsessed with protecting
and preserving yourself.
