Evercall Ready

Postby Gerald » January 4th, 2012, 10:31 am

I always like to stop in at the Ernest Tubb record shop everytime I'm through Nashville and search through their old country and bluegrass CDs.

I stumbled across a little obscure record from way back in 1985 (and on CD in 06) entitled "Ever Call Ready"

It's pretty straightforward Gospel by the way of Bluegrass.

But the interesting thing is the members of the group, all of who are old Rock n Rollers.

Chris Hillman (THe Byrds, Flying Burrito Brothers, Desert Rose Band) and Bernie Leadon (Flying BUrrito Brothers and The Eagles) with others from various old groups like Manassas, Rolling Thunder Review and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

HIllman does a good version of "It's Beginning to Rain" and the CD has some other older gospel favorites as well. (And for some odd reason a bluegrass version of the Instrumental "Panhandle Rag")
If you're interested in this type of stuff you can check it out at:

ANd here is a recent interview with Chris HIllman on the 700 club:

Gerald,
If you love Bluegrass... my dad has a Bluegrass, Gospel, Country night every third sunday at the "Black Hawk School House" in Black Hawk, MS. It USED to be a one stop sign area. We're talking the real deal stuff from years ago.

It's an old large school house that has been repurposed by my Dad first and now turned over to a county sponsored club. They have talent from all over Mississippi and several from Nashville B talent & players have visited. An average of three to four groups play.

They had a young Dobro guy from Tupelo, MS the other night and he was unreal. He was playing so fast and incredible that one of his finger picks flew off and whizzed by me. I quickly jumped up and rushed it back to him so he could complete full fingered.

Flat out awesome. I have videos..

And I would be interested.

One of my I'm-glad-I-saw-perform people was Josh Graves, the dobro player for Flatt & Scruggs.

Bluegrass is one of those things when it's done good it's fabulous and when it's done bad it's horrendous.

Theres a man here in Louisville who is a fiddle genuis I've watched perform since he was a young child. Now he's played on the Opry, Prarie Home companion and before Congress. He's on Youtube. Name is Michael Cleveland.

My son has a high school bluegrass band. All 6 are teenagers. They have been very successful here in Chattanooga. They have recorded 2 CD's and sold over 1,500. They have been on several TV shows here locally. They were asked to provide music for the Home Edition Makeover TV show here last year. They provided music for Senator Bob Corker's birthday party at his home this summer. They do bluegrass gospel and perform at many churches. You can get a sample on Youtube. They are Mountain Cove Bluegrass Band. They are on face book & have a website; Mountaincovebluegrass.com

I just had to bragg a little........

It's on my iPhone and I'll have to grab them off. Or you could shoot me your email and I'll just email you a direct movie file from my phone.

But note.. the videos.. like a snapshot of the Grand Canyon... just don't do it JUSTICE. When you are live.. ( literally 4 feet from them ) it's not like the mechanical reproduction of the recorded sound launching from one speaker with it's limitations.. you can hear the surrounded fullness of the instruments.

And even catch the quick smiles on the artists faces when they suddenly overwhelm the crowd.

Mac, My email can be found in my profile.

I think I linked this a while back but I can't really remember. I have a Youtube channel of Bluegrass (and old country) that I have shot at various venues.

Most come from C R WIlson's Music Barn in Sherperdsville, KY. CR Wilson was so famous for his promotion of bluegrass that he was personally greeted on air by Johnny Cash on the old Johnny Cash Show when he dropped in for a taping.
